<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You finally found a time to start a new air dry clay project. You pull out that leftover block of air dry clay you carefully stored a few months ago. You unwrap it and start <a href="https://clayandme.com/do-you-need-to-knead-air-dry-clay/">kneading</a> it. But oh my f**ing god, it does not behave as you want.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of soft, smooth and pliable dough, it just breaks into tiny pieces, flakes or dust in your hands, leaving crumbly chunks all over your table.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_62691c-94"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="749" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/crumbled-air-dry-clay-1024x749.webp" alt="crumbled air dry clay" class="kb-img wp-image-5036" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/crumbled-air-dry-clay-1024x749.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/crumbled-air-dry-clay-300x220.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/crumbled-air-dry-clay-768x562.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/crumbled-air-dry-clay.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>crumbled air dry clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have been there. First, I thought I was dealing with the cracking of air dry clay. But It wasn’t. This scenario is called the crumbling of air dry clay. Crumbling of air dry clay can happen when you are trying to use leftover air dry clay, as I mentioned earlier or even when you open a brand new package.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But don’t throw out that dried block of air dry clay. I’ve been there and threw some but later found out it was salvageable.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a beginner air dry clay artist, let me tell you how I avoid my leftover air dry clay and freshly opened air dry clay from crumbling with simple and easy techniques.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let’s dig in!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">First, identify whether your air dry clay is crumbling or cracking</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the most confusing part. People and even I didn’t know the difference between air dry clay crumbling and cracking because they look the same. But trust me, they are completely different scenarios.</p>

<div class="kb-row-layout-wrap kb-row-layout-id5035_fc461e-2d alignnone has-theme-palette8-background-color kt-row-has-bg wp-block-kadence-rowlayout"><div class="kt-row-column-wrap kt-has-1-columns kt-row-layout-equal kt-tab-layout-inherit kt-mobile-layout-row kt-row-valign-top">

<div class="wp-block-kadence-column kadence-column5035_61fb71-47"><div class="kt-inside-inner-col">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>In the simplest terms, cracking of air dry clay occurs due to too much water and crumbling occurs due to the lack of water and the failure of the binders inside. </strong></p>
</div></div>

</div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This means you need to use only the right amount of water to survive from both cracking and crumbling of air dry clay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Actually, cracking is what commonly happens in air dry clay.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Read: <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-prevent-air-dry-clay-trays-from-cracking-while-drying/">How to Prevent Air Dry Clay Trays from Cracking While Drying</a></em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When kneaded and smoothed out with too much water, the clay may crack as it dries due to the high water evaporation rate.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cracking means splits or fissures on the clay surface and it happens due to faster drying of the outer surface of air dry clay compared to inner layers causing uneven shrinkage. Uneven shrinkage builds up tension between the layers of air dry clay and tears the surface apart. <strong>Mostly, the clay stays in one place when cracking, but when crumbling, clay breaks down into tiny pieces, flakes, or dust.</strong></p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_53f790-0a"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="928" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-breaks-into-tiny-pieces-928x1024.webp" alt="air dry clay breaks into tiny pieces" class="kb-img wp-image-5037" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-breaks-into-tiny-pieces-928x1024.webp 928w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-breaks-into-tiny-pieces-272x300.webp 272w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-breaks-into-tiny-pieces-768x847.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-breaks-into-tiny-pieces.webp 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 928px) 100vw, 928px" /><figcaption>air dry clay breaks into tiny pieces</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ok, now let’s see why crumbling happens,</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why is my air dry clay crumbling?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay crumbles due to the lack of moisture and failure of the binders inside. Air dry clay is a highly porous material with lots of moisture inside, but when it loses its moisture, it breaks into small pieces, flakes, or dust particles.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So we need to find out exactly why it loses moisture.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Based on my experience and things I gathered, here are the main reasons why your air dry clay is crumbling,</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Lack of moisture when kneading and sculpting.</li>

<li>Poor sealing and storing of the leftover air dry clay.</li>

<li>Using a low quality, unreputed air dry clay product.</li>

<li>Kneading and shaping the clay too long.</li>

<li>Not kneading the clay properly.</li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don’t panic, I’ll explain each of the above reasons one by one in simple terms.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Lack of moisture when kneading and sculpting</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Using too much water leads air dry clay cracking, and lack of water crumbles the clay. It&#8217;s a double-edged sword situation.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As soon as you take a fresh piece of air dry clay from the newly opened package, condition and knead it by tapping a little bit of water on the clay surface. Then knead the clay well until it becomes soft and pliable.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But if you do not use water when kneading or use too little water, which is not enough compared to the clay piece you took, the clay won’t be soft enough when kneading, instead, it will start to break down into tiny pieces, which is called crumbling of the clay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Same scenario when sculpting the clay.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re making a tiny hand, flower pellets, or a decoration item with air dry clay, use enough amount of water to keep the clay soft while sculpting and shaping. Lack of moisture starts crumbling in sharp corners, curves, edges and your sculpt will eventually break.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_8684dd-92"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/you-can-see-the-failed-binders-of-air-dry-clay-piece-that-cause-crumbling-768x1024.webp" alt="you can see the failed binders of air dry clay piece that cause crumbling" class="kb-img wp-image-5038" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/you-can-see-the-failed-binders-of-air-dry-clay-piece-that-cause-crumbling-768x1024.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/you-can-see-the-failed-binders-of-air-dry-clay-piece-that-cause-crumbling-225x300.webp 225w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/you-can-see-the-failed-binders-of-air-dry-clay-piece-that-cause-crumbling-1152x1536.webp 1152w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/you-can-see-the-failed-binders-of-air-dry-clay-piece-that-cause-crumbling.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>you can see the failed binders of air dry clay piece that cause crumbling</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">&nbsp;Poor sealing and storing of the leftover air dry clay</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know how tired you feel after working hours making a clay project. But don’t forget to skip sealing and storing your leftover or unused air dry clay chunks.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Otherwise, the clay will get exposed to the air and lose a lot of moisture over time and it will start to break into pieces in other words, it will crumble.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After opening the package and taking the clay amount you want, place the leftover or unused clay inside a plastic bag, polythene cling film and airtight it by wrapping it tightly. Then place the sealed package in an airtight plastic or Tupperware-type container.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This way you can keep your air dry clay fresh as new for months or even years because moisture inside has nowhere to go or evaporate to the outside.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_cd22d7-50"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="942" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/wrapping-leftover-air-dry-clay-with-plastic-bag-1024x942.webp" alt="wrapping leftover air dry clay with plastic bag" class="kb-img wp-image-5026" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/wrapping-leftover-air-dry-clay-with-plastic-bag-1024x942.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/wrapping-leftover-air-dry-clay-with-plastic-bag-300x276.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/wrapping-leftover-air-dry-clay-with-plastic-bag-768x707.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/wrapping-leftover-air-dry-clay-with-plastic-bag.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>wrapping leftover air dry clay with plastic bag</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Using a low quality, unreputed air dry clay product</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Usually I use Mont Marte, DAS, or other reputable air dyr clay brands when making air dry clay projects, including trinket trays and home decor items.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But one time all of those were out of stock and I had to buy an unreputable cheap air dry clay brand from an unknown manufacturer and learned the lesson the hard way when making my <a href="https://clayandme.com/why-my-pineapple-trinket-tray-failed/">pineapple trinket tray project.</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The clay started to crumble as soon as I started to condition and knead after even applying a little bit of water.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Clay was started to get messy and ruined my workspace with all the tiny clay pieces, dust and flakes.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_dd5217-b2"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1021" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-on-the-clay-slab-1024x1021.webp" alt="cracks on the clay slab" class="kb-img wp-image-4695" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-on-the-clay-slab-1024x1021.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-on-the-clay-slab-300x300.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-on-the-clay-slab-150x150.webp 150w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-on-the-clay-slab-768x766.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-on-the-clay-slab-500x500.webp 500w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-on-the-clay-slab.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>cracks on the clay slab</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, I thought the problem was my mistake and tried again with a fresh clay piece with a different amount of water but the results were the same. Hours of my work were ruined because even after kneading the clay after several attempts, it started to break into pieces while rolling.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I couldn’t even finish making the project and found out the issue in the binders of the clay.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_201554-3c"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/project-got-messy-1024x1024.webp" alt="Pineapple trinket tray failed" class="kb-img wp-image-4686" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/project-got-messy-1024x1024.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/project-got-messy-300x300.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/project-got-messy-150x150.webp 150w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/project-got-messy-768x769.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/project-got-messy-500x500.webp 500w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/project-got-messy.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Pineapple trinket tray failed</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes it&#8217;s not always moisture that causes the crumbling, it may be a failure of clay binders.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When clay binders do not bind well with each other, the clay will start to break into pieces. You cannot control it because it is a manufacturing error.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I even did a comparison between that <a href="https://clayandme.com/mont-marte-vs-unbranded-air-dry-clay/">unreputed air dry clay brand vs Mont Marte</a>, which is a reputed one based on my personal experience.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After several days, I tried to make the <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-i-made-a-pineapple-trinket-tray-with-air-dry-clay/">same pineapple trinket tray with Mont Marte air dry</a> clay and it came out so good. I followed the same amount of water and the same techniques and the results were much better. This is why you should read reviews of the air dry clay brand before purchase to save your time, effort and money.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_4a671d-ed"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/pineapple-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-768x1024.webp" alt="pineapple trinket tray made with air dry clay" class="kb-img wp-image-4776" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/pineapple-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-768x1024.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/pineapple-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-225x300.webp 225w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/pineapple-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-1152x1536.webp 1152w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/pineapple-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>pineapple trinket tray made with air dry clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Kneading and shaping the clay too long</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overworking causes your air dry clay to crumble. Let me tell you how. When you’re kneading or shaping air dry clay for too long, your palm and fingers absorb the moisture of the clay due to the natural heat of your hands. Yes, that’s true.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But this is negligible when you work fast. But when you’re overworking, the moisture of the clay will be lost little by little because your hands draw moisture out of the clay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Actually, the longer you hold and mess with a single clay piece, the more likely it is to lead to crumbly edges.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just stop the kneading when you feel the clay is soft enough for shaping. Or add a little bit of extra water on the surface if you really want to keep kneading more.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_07fa5b-a0"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="860" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-clay-3-860x1024.webp" alt="kneading the clay" class="kb-img wp-image-4779" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-clay-3-860x1024.webp 860w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-clay-3-252x300.webp 252w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-clay-3-768x915.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-clay-3.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px" /><figcaption>kneading the clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Not kneading the clay properly</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know this sounds confusing. One time I told you not to knead too long and here I’m telling you to knead the clay well. Actually, both are true. You need to knead the clay until it hits the ideal soft, pliable stage. It&#8217;s not hard. Your hands will feel that when kneading.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kneading helps to spread the moisture evenly across all the layers of air dry clay. So it fixes the areas that lack moisture and prevents them from crumbling.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_fba795-0f"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="949" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-clay-949x1024.webp" alt="kneading clay" class="kb-img wp-image-4371" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-clay-949x1024.webp 949w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-clay-278x300.webp 278w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-clay-768x829.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-clay.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 949px) 100vw, 949px" /><figcaption>kneading clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to stop air dry clay from crumbling while sculpting</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Follow the steps below to keep your air dry clay moist and prevent it from crumbling while making your craft.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Follow the right way of conditioning and kneading the clay</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After taking a fresh air dry clay piece or a leftover air dry clay piece or an unused one, condition it first by tapping a little bit of water on the surface.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_642fbb-fa"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="739" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/conditioning-the-clay-2-1024x739.webp" alt="conditioning the clay" class="kb-img wp-image-4961" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/conditioning-the-clay-2-1024x739.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/conditioning-the-clay-2-300x217.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/conditioning-the-clay-2-768x554.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/conditioning-the-clay-2.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>conditioning the clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then start kneading the clay by pulling, pushing, and pressing with force for several minutes like you’re making a pizza dough.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Kneading helps to spread the moisture evenly, release the air bubbles that are trapped inside, warm up the clay binders and increase elasticity before shaping, which helps prevent the clay from crumbling.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Keep kneading, adding a little bit of water until the clay becomes soft and pliable enough for shaping or sculpting.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don’t let the clay become dry when kneading, which can cause crumbling. Moist it continuously with a little bit of water while kneading, but don’t overdo it. You must stop it and move on to the next step as it becomes soft enough.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make sure not to add too much water when kneading, which may lead to cracks when drying due to uneven shrinkage.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_4c578a-c8"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="962" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-air-dry-clay-1-962x1024.webp" alt="kneading the air dry clay" class="kb-img wp-image-4612" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-air-dry-clay-1-962x1024.webp 962w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-air-dry-clay-1-282x300.webp 282w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-air-dry-clay-1-768x817.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-air-dry-clay-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 962px) 100vw, 962px" /><figcaption>kneading the air dry clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Use the score and slip method when attaching</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://clayandme.com/why-is-my-air-dry-clay-not-sticking-together/">You cannot attach two air dry clay pieces</a> just by pressing them together because they crumble as the clay dries.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>First, you need to score the attaching surfaces using the scoring tool or a toothpick and them apply a clay and water mixture called “slip”.</strong></p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_69fc9a-3c"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="639" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-bottom-of-the-avocado-pit-1024x639.webp" alt="scoring the bottom of the avocado pit" class="kb-img wp-image-4165" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-bottom-of-the-avocado-pit-1024x639.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-bottom-of-the-avocado-pit-300x187.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-bottom-of-the-avocado-pit-768x479.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-bottom-of-the-avocado-pit.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>scoring before attach</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Slip is made by mixing an equal amount of tiny clay pieces with water and letting it set for a few hours. It’s a creamy paste that acts like a cement for air dry clay pieces.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Or you can tap a little bit of water on the scored surfaces before attaching two air dry clay pieces. This is what I do because I don’t have “slip,” and it just works fine. But don’t apply too much water because it weakens the clay.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Keeping your hands and the clay moist</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Always keep a cup of water nearby when kneading, shaping and sculpting the clay. Wet your palms, fingers and the clay while working with it to avoid it from losing moisture and breaking into pieces.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But as I told you earlier, excess water may lead the clay to crack when drying. So, always use a little that just enough water to make the clay soft and maintain its elasticity.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to fix air dry clay that is already crumbly</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the best way I fix crumbly air dry clay before using it,</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Sprinkle a little bit of water onto the crumbly air dry clay pieces.</li>

<li>Put it into an airtight bag.</li>

<li>Seal the bag.</li>

<li>Place it in an airtight plastic container.</li>

<li>Let the clay rehydrate overnight.</li>
</ol>

<div class="kb-row-layout-wrap kb-row-layout-id5035_77828a-bd alignnone has-theme-palette8-background-color kt-row-has-bg wp-block-kadence-rowlayout"><div class="kt-row-column-wrap kt-has-1-columns kt-row-layout-equal kt-tab-layout-inherit kt-mobile-layout-row kt-row-valign-top">

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Make sure not to add too much water to rehydrate the clay because excess moisture may lead to cracks as the clay dries. Sprinkle water using a spray bottle.</strong></p>
</div></div>

</div></div>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_ce1f0a-b5"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="805" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/leftover-air-dry-clay-in-a-airtight-plastic-container-805x1024.webp" alt="leftover air dry clay in a airtight plastic container" class="kb-img wp-image-5027" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/leftover-air-dry-clay-in-a-airtight-plastic-container-805x1024.webp 805w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/leftover-air-dry-clay-in-a-airtight-plastic-container-236x300.webp 236w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/leftover-air-dry-clay-in-a-airtight-plastic-container-768x977.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/leftover-air-dry-clay-in-a-airtight-plastic-container.webp 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 805px) 100vw, 805px" /><figcaption>leftover air dry clay in a airtight plastic container</figcaption></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Is your clay past its shelf life?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay does not last forever even if you use the best storing techniques. Its binders can get weaker and the moisture level becomes lower over a year or two, depending on the climate and packaging.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you live in a very humid area, the moisture in air dry clay lasts longer because water evaporate higher from air dry clay when the moisture in the air is drastically lower. This means the shelf life of air dry clay in a dry climate is much less than wet climates.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reputable air dry clay companies use packages that are resealable after you open the package. So after using the necessary clay amount you can wrap the leftover clay with that package and seal by putting it inside a plastic bag and sealing it airtight.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_fb0578-3a"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="894" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/label-comes-with-Mont-Marte-and-DAS-air-dry-clay-resealable-packages-894x1024.webp" alt="label comes with Mont Marte and DAS air dry clay resealable packages" class="kb-img wp-image-5029" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/label-comes-with-Mont-Marte-and-DAS-air-dry-clay-resealable-packages-894x1024.webp 894w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/label-comes-with-Mont-Marte-and-DAS-air-dry-clay-resealable-packages-262x300.webp 262w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/label-comes-with-Mont-Marte-and-DAS-air-dry-clay-resealable-packages-768x880.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/label-comes-with-Mont-Marte-and-DAS-air-dry-clay-resealable-packages.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 894px) 100vw, 894px" /><figcaption>label comes with Mont Marte and DAS air dry clay resealable packages</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the clay is bone dry, rock hard and crumbles into tiny pieces or dust when holding even after you try to rehydrate it, it is best to throw it away. Its shelf life is over and cannot be used again.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I had to throw an entire batch of air dry clay because that brand was cheap and it crumbled so much.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Proper storage tips to keep clay fresh</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s how you should <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-store-air-dry-clay-once-opened/">store leftover, unused air dry clay</a> to prevent it from crumbling,</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Place the clay inside a clean plastic bag and seal it by pressing and blowing air out.</li>

<li>Wrap the clay using a cling film and seal it by pressing and blowing air out.</li>

<li>Place the leftover or unused air dry clay in an airtight plastic container or Tupperware-type container and close the lid properly.</li>

<li>Place the sealed air dry clay package in a cool and dark area. (I place it in a kitchen drawer).</li>
</ul>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5035_d4f80e-2b"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="906" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/airtight-plastic-cntainer-I-use-1024x906.webp" alt="airtight plastic cntainer I use" class="kb-img wp-image-5028" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/airtight-plastic-cntainer-I-use-1024x906.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/airtight-plastic-cntainer-I-use-300x266.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/airtight-plastic-cntainer-I-use-768x680.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/airtight-plastic-cntainer-I-use.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>airtight plastic cntainer I use</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By following the above tips, you can avoid future crumbling of air dry clay.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final thoughts</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now you know whats the difference between the crumbling and cracking of air dry clay. Generally, in a finished piece, cracking happens first and crumbling happens as a result. Clay cracks as a result of fast drying and it crumbles and comes as pieces when you try to handle it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I told cracking mostly happens due to the usage of excess water, while crumbling occurs due to a lack of moisture.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Follow the given tips and techniques to overcome the crumbling of air dry clay to keep the moisture in your air dry clay piece to make a beautiful masterpiece. Cheers! 🤟🏾</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is one of the major headaches all beginner air dry clay artists face. You cleaned the rolling pin well before starting to roll, but the god damn clay messes up the entire working space by sticking to your rolling pin.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5031_120688-15"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="992" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-stuck-to-the-rolling-pin-1024x992.webp" alt="air dry clay stuck to the rolling pin" class="kb-img wp-image-5032" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-stuck-to-the-rolling-pin-1024x992.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-stuck-to-the-rolling-pin-300x291.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-stuck-to-the-rolling-pin-768x744.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-stuck-to-the-rolling-pin.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>air dry clay stuck to the rolling pin</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You changed the working mat to a silicone or PVC mat, which is great to work with air dry clay, but it still sticks. But have you thought of replacing your rolling pin? That might be the issue.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Have you used the wooden cooking rolling pin you use to make dough to roll air dry clay? Hmm, that might be the issue.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have tried wooden, plastic, and acrylic rolling pins to stop the clay from sticking to them and finally found the perfect one. Now the headache is gone and my clay does not stick to it and does not mess up my working area.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let me tell you how I did that and what I chose as a beginner clay artist like you.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why is your air dry clay so sticky?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay is a highly porous material with lots of moisture and binders, which keep the clay pliable and help to harden it properly as the clay dries. When rolling, the moisture squeezes out and attaches to any porous surface, which is why your air dry clay is so sticky. Basically, you need to use a rolling pin that is not porous.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why wooden rolling pins are bad</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can clearly see this happening when working with a wooden rolling pin. Wood is a highly porous material just like air dry clay. It basically acts like a sponge that sucks out water quickly.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, when you roll a conditioned and <a href="https://clayandme.com/do-you-need-to-knead-air-dry-clay/">kneaded air dry clay</a> slab with a wooden rolling pin, it quickly sucks out all the moisture inside of the clay, leaving only the clay binders.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Due to the water absorption and leaving binders behind, they create a vacuum like seal between the clay and the rolling pin surface.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>When you keep rolling and lifting the pin, the vacuum seal causes clay to stretch, crack and even tear apart.</strong> That’s what we call clay sticking to the rolling pin. Clay is basically making a bond with the rolling pin surface due to loss of its moisture.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So you need to find a rolling pin that does not suck out the moisture of air dry clay.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5031_7d6ee0-77"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="321" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0540-1024x321.webp" alt="kitchen rolling pin I used in the begining" class="kb-img wp-image-4434" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0540-1024x321.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0540-300x94.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0540-768x241.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0540.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>kitchen rolling pin I used in the begining</figcaption></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to stop air dry clay from sticking to your rolling pin</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During my first few air dry clay projects, I used a kitchen wooden rolling pin and experienced this issue. So I stopped using it and started following methods to stop clay from sticking.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ditch the wooden rolling pin and switch to an acrylic rolling pin</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I told you earlier wooden rolling pin sucks out moisture from air dry clay and stick with it. Therefore, we need to try out rolling pins that are non porous and do not absorb moisture, which are,</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Acrylic rolling pin</li>

<li>Stainless steel rolling pin</li>

<li>PVC rolling pin</li>
</ul>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5031_481a9e-0c"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="788" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/acrylic-rolling-pin-1024x788.webp" alt="acrylic rolling pin" class="kb-img wp-image-4258" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/acrylic-rolling-pin-1024x788.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/acrylic-rolling-pin-300x231.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/acrylic-rolling-pin-768x591.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/acrylic-rolling-pin.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>acrylic rolling pin</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://clayandme.com/do-you-need-an-acrylic-rolling-pin-for-air-dry-clay/">I use an acrylic rolling pin.</a> It does not sucks out moisture from air dry clay and does not stick to the clay and gives a super smooth finish.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Acrylic rolling pins are easier to use and comes with detachable rubber or silicone rings to get an even thickness of the clay slab.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most importantly, they are easier to clean. You just have to wash it and wipe it out.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wrap the rolling pin with parchment paper</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you don’t have the budget to move to a different rolling pin or you really like to work with the wooden rolling pin, I have a solution for you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just don&#8217;t let the wooden surface come into contact with the air dry clay surface. You can do this by wrapping your wooden rolling pin with parchment paper before you start to roll out the clay slab.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Parchment paper works as a barrier and does not get wet due to the moisture of the wet clay and does not stick to the clay like regular paper.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It works as a barrier between the wood and clay.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You simply have to wrap the wooden rolling pin before you start rolling or place parchment paper over the wet clay slab and <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-roll-out-air-dry-clay-perfectly/">start rolling</a> over it with the wooden rolling pin. Simple as that!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Use a dusting of cornstarch</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Corstach can be used as a barrier between the clay surface and the rolling pin, avoiding clay from sticking to the rolling pin.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you use a wooden rolling pin or any other pin that stick to the clay, lightly dust the surface with cornstarch.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But dont use too much cornstarch because they accelerate the drying speed of wet clay and leads to cracks on the clay slab.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don’t use powder or talcum powder as a barrier because they contain harsh chemicals that can damage the air dry clay slab. One time I used powder and leaned that hard way.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5031_2d896e-e2"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="570" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/adding-powder-to-the-surface-1024x570.webp" alt="adding powder to the surface" class="kb-img wp-image-3964" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/adding-powder-to-the-surface-1024x570.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/adding-powder-to-the-surface-300x167.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/adding-powder-to-the-surface-768x428.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/adding-powder-to-the-surface.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>adding powder to the surface</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The plastic wrap barrier method</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I already mentioned about this method. You can wrap the rolling pin with a plastic film, parchment paper or paper wax and start rolling. Or you can place plastic film, parchment paper or wax paper over the wet clay surface and roll. However, don’t let air dry clay come into contact with the rolling pin surface, which can lead to sticking.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Condition your clay first</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Conditioning and kneading the clay is must before you roll out the clay. Condition and knead the clay with a little bit of water and use pull, press and puch method to make the clay soft enough.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kneading helps to spread the moisture evenly across all the layers of air dyr clay and it makes the rolling process easier, clay more smooth, pliable and stops the clay from sticking to the rolling pin.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5031_496821-55"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="860" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-clay-3-860x1024.webp" alt="kneading the clay" class="kb-img wp-image-4779" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-clay-3-860x1024.webp 860w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-clay-3-252x300.webp 252w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-clay-3-768x915.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/kneading-the-clay-3.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px" /><figcaption>kneading the clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Don&#8217;t forget your work surface</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even though you replaced your wooden rolling pin with a non porous, non sticky acrylic or stainless steel rolling pin, you may still experience the stickiness of the clay by seeing the clay sticking to your working table.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5031_b9e43d-0d"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="720" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-was-stuck-and-so-hard-to-remove-1024x720.webp" alt="clay was stuck and so hard to remove" class="kb-img wp-image-4704" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-was-stuck-and-so-hard-to-remove-1024x720.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-was-stuck-and-so-hard-to-remove-300x211.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-was-stuck-and-so-hard-to-remove-768x540.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-was-stuck-and-so-hard-to-remove.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>clay was stuck and so hard to remove</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If your table is made of wood, sad to say Just like what happened with wooden rolling pin, it will suck out moisture from the clay and stick with it, making a vacuum like seal.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, you need to change the working mat to stop clay from sticking to your surface. Silicone and <a href="https://clayandme.com/why-i-use-a-pvc-mat-for-air-dry-clay-projects/">PVC mat </a>(what I use) are the best working layers for air dry clay to <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-keep-air-dry-clay-from-sticking-to-your-table/">avoid it from sticking to the surface.</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Simply lay the PVC or silicone mat over your wooden working table and start rolling the clay over it.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5031_a07b63-7a size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="740" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PVC-mat-I-use.webp" alt="PVC mat I use" class="kb-img wp-image-4431" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PVC-mat-I-use.webp 1000w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PVC-mat-I-use-300x222.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PVC-mat-I-use-768x568.webp 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>PVC mat I use</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final thoughts</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now you know exactly why your air dry clay sticks to the rolling pin and how to avoid that either by fixing it or by replacing the pin.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you use a wooden one, use the parchment paper method and apply cornstarch before rolling. If you use a PVC or stainless one, you have nothing to worry about and just be careful not to let the clay stick to your mat. Happy making! Cheers! 🤟🏾</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Clean cuts are a must to have sharp edges on any air dry clay project. One of the main reasons why my latest <a href="https://clayandme.com/why-my-pineapple-trinket-tray-failed/">pineapple trinket tray project failed</a> is because I couldn’t get clean and sharp edges and the clay tore from the edges while cutting. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I gave up on the project even before finishing the tray base because it looked so ugly with those torn edges, like being eaten by termites.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4721_b34494-a1"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="957" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/edges-were-ruined-of-my-pinapple-trinket-tray-2.webp" alt="edges were torn of my pinapple trinket tray" class="kb-img wp-image-4722" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/edges-were-ruined-of-my-pinapple-trinket-tray-2.webp 800w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/edges-were-ruined-of-my-pinapple-trinket-tray-2-251x300.webp 251w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/edges-were-ruined-of-my-pinapple-trinket-tray-2-768x919.webp 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>my failed pinapple trinket tray with torn edges</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hours of my work were ruined and as a beginner air dry clay artist, I literally cried. But that was a part of the learning curve of air dry clay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Later, I learned that happened because of the cheap, unbranded air dry clay product I used and because I applied too much water to the clay, which made it too wet. 💧</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="why you should never buy cheap air dry clay ❌" width="720" height="405" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zhn1uNIzqGk?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By the way, I was able to successfully create many fruit-inspired trinket tray projects, including <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-i-made-an-orange-trinket-tray-with-air-dry-clay/">orange trinket tray</a>, <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-make-an-air-dry-clay-strawberry-trinket-tray/">strawberry</a>, <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-i-made-a-papaya-trinket-tray-with-air-dry-clay/">papaya</a>, <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-i-made-an-avocado-trinket-tray-with-air-dry-clay/">avocado</a>, and more, with nice and sharp edges and clean cuts. Lol, yes, I’m a fruit geek. 🍓</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, let me tell you exactly how you can cut clean and sharp edges in air dry clay without messing things up.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let’s go…..</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why air dry clay tears when you cut it</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Air dry clay tears due to two main reasons: moisture and friction</strong>. Air dry clay is a porous material with lots of moisture inside.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But before kneading the clay, you need to condition it by tapping with only a little bit of water. This is where you need to be careful.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4721_8a0717-c9"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="878" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-teared-apart-around-the-edges-1-878x1024.webp" alt="clay teared apart around the edges" class="kb-img wp-image-4725" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-teared-apart-around-the-edges-1-878x1024.webp 878w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-teared-apart-around-the-edges-1-257x300.webp 257w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-teared-apart-around-the-edges-1-768x896.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-teared-apart-around-the-edges-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 878px) 100vw, 878px" /><figcaption>clay teared apart around the edges</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Applying too much water when kneading makes the clay softer. But on the other hand, it makes the clay sticky.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you roll the clay out on your mat and use a craft knife to cut the edges, the excess moisture can cause the clay to stick to the metal blade, resulting in tearing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The stickiness of wet clay creates extra friction and adhesion that results in high resistance to movement.</p>

<div class="kb-row-layout-wrap kb-row-layout-id4721_6d9bd3-c0 alignnone wp-block-kadence-rowlayout"><div class="kt-row-column-wrap kt-has-1-columns kt-row-layout-equal kt-tab-layout-inherit kt-mobile-layout-row kt-row-valign-top">

<div class="wp-block-kadence-column kadence-column4721_f8cd17-08"><div class="kt-inside-inner-col">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Wet clay physically grips the side of your metal craft knife as you pull it through the slab, resulting in torn, jagged edges when cutting.</strong></p>
</div></div>

</div></div>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4721_29bec4-a0"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1011" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-started-to-occur-1011x1024.webp" alt="cracks started to occur" class="kb-img wp-image-4723" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-started-to-occur-1011x1024.webp 1011w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-started-to-occur-296x300.webp 296w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-started-to-occur-768x778.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-started-to-occur.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1011px) 100vw, 1011px" /><figcaption>cracks started to occur around the edges</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You need to cleanly part the clay. If you drag the craft knife along the wet clay without lifting it up, it creates a high surface tension.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Due to high surface tension, clay sticks to the blade and stretches and pulls along the path of the blade.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the clay reaches its stretching limit, the structural integrity will be lost, and you will end up with ragged, uneven tears along your cuts.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4721_f21b3e-20"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="998" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-on-the-slab-and-around-the-edges-1-1024x998.webp" alt="cracks on the slab and around the edges" class="kb-img wp-image-4724" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-on-the-slab-and-around-the-edges-1-1024x998.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-on-the-slab-and-around-the-edges-1-300x293.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-on-the-slab-and-around-the-edges-1-768x749.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cracks-on-the-slab-and-around-the-edges-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>cracks on the slab and around the edges</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This friction issue mainly occurs due to the clay type you use. Cheap and unbranded clay does not have premium binding agents like quality ones. So, they don’t have the right amount of elasticity and crack quickly, forming torn edges upon stretching.</strong> That’s exactly what happened during my pineapple trinket tray project.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The clay slab started to form micro cracks on the surface and around the edges and it tore apart when I tried to lift it up after rolling.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Key factors causing edge tearing of air dry clay</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, based on things we learned, here are the things that cause air dry clay to tear,</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Adding too much water</strong>: Makes the clay wet and sticky, causing it to grab the blade.</li>

<li><strong>Dragging the blade horizontally</strong>: Pulling the knife horizontally through wet clay increases the friction and stretches the clay.</li>

<li><strong>Blade is dirty</strong>: If the blade contains air dry clay residue you used in your previous project or dust, it can tear air dry clay.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before cutting, if you feel the clay is too wet, let it stay as it is for a few minutes to let the excess water evaporate. Once it comes to the ideal state, start cutting to get nice, clean, and sharp edges. ⏳</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As you can see, water is the worst enemy of air dry clay.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Best tools for cutting air dry clay</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dedicated tools are great for air dry clay cutting to get nice and sharp edges with less trouble.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Craft knives (x-acto) vs. Needle tools</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Craft knives are best for clean and straight cuts in air dry clay, while needle tools are great for detailing. Don&#8217;t mix things up.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Craft knives (X-Acto)</strong> are best for slicing straight edges, cutting geometric or symmetrical shapes, and trimming flat pieces.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4721_ba42c2-84"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1018" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/8.-cutting-the-watermelon-tray-base-1018x1024.webp" alt="cutting the watermelon tray base" class="kb-img wp-image-4538" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/8.-cutting-the-watermelon-tray-base-1018x1024.webp 1018w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/8.-cutting-the-watermelon-tray-base-298x300.webp 298w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/8.-cutting-the-watermelon-tray-base-150x150.webp 150w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/8.-cutting-the-watermelon-tray-base-768x772.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/8.-cutting-the-watermelon-tray-base.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1018px) 100vw, 1018px" /><figcaption>craft knife</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They are built for that. The sharp, flat blade of craft knives cuts smoothly through thick air dry clay like cheese.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But the blade of craft knives can drag or bend if the air dry clay is too wet or sticky, like I discussed earlier.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the other hand, <strong>needle tools</strong> are great for scoring, which means scratching the surfaces of air dry clay pieces before <a href="https://clayandme.com/why-is-my-air-dry-clay-not-sticking-together/">attaching</a> with water for a strong bond.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4721_bed2cf-13"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="901" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-bottom-area-of-tray-rims-before-attach-1024x901.webp" alt="scoring using a needle tool" class="kb-img wp-image-4394" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-bottom-area-of-tray-rims-before-attach-1024x901.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-bottom-area-of-tray-rims-before-attach-300x264.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-bottom-area-of-tray-rims-before-attach-768x676.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-bottom-area-of-tray-rims-before-attach.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>scoring using a needle tool</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They have thin metal points that can reach tight spaces without damaging the clay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Never use needle tools for cutting air dry clay slabs or blocks because they can&#8217;t perform straight cuts.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having the right tool for cutting is a must for a nice and sharp edge.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During my pineapple trinket tray project, I did use a craft knife for cutting around the edge, but the issue was with the unbranded, cheap clay, and I used too much water while kneading it.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Paper template</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Freehand drawing and cutting on a wet clay slab can form torn edges, especially when you’re not good at drawing.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4721_16eece-51"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="947" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-drawing-with-errors-2-947x1024.webp" alt="freehand drawing with errors" class="kb-img wp-image-4726" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-drawing-with-errors-2-947x1024.webp 947w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-drawing-with-errors-2-278x300.webp 278w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-drawing-with-errors-2-768x830.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-drawing-with-errors-2.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 947px) 100vw, 947px" /><figcaption>freehand drawing with errors</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The best option to trace and cut precisely without losing the shape is to use a paper template. <strong>With a paper template, you can easily cut clean and sharp edges on wet air dry clay.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, Google the image you want to trace on your clay slabs and take a printout of it. Then cut along the outline and make a <a href="https://thecraftcrib.com/diy-stencil/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stencil</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Place the paper template gently on your wet clay slab and trace around it before cutting. Finally, cut along the lines you traced. ✂️</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4721_918bb0-04"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="812" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-drawing-multiple-times-with-errors-812x1024.webp" alt="freehand drawing multiple times with errors" class="kb-img wp-image-4727" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-drawing-multiple-times-with-errors-812x1024.webp 812w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-drawing-multiple-times-with-errors-238x300.webp 238w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-drawing-multiple-times-with-errors-768x968.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-drawing-multiple-times-with-errors.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 812px) 100vw, 812px" /><figcaption>freehand drawing multiple times with errors</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-shape-organic-air-dry-clay-forms-without-molds-or-cookie-cutters/">I generally use freehand cutting </a>when making my projects because I’m bad at drawing and want to improve. But I learned my lesson in my pineapple trinket tray project because there were a lot of errors and I had to trace and cut several times, which is not nice.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4721_427799-2f"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="840" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-cutting-with-torn-edges-2-840x1024.webp" alt="freehand cutting with torn edges" class="kb-img wp-image-4728" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-cutting-with-torn-edges-2-840x1024.webp 840w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-cutting-with-torn-edges-2-246x300.webp 246w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-cutting-with-torn-edges-2-768x936.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/freehand-cutting-with-torn-edges-2.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /><figcaption>freehand cutting with torn edges</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Freehand cutting comes with lots of errors. Yes, it improves your handling over time, but when you’re making a professional project with air dry clay, better to use a paper template.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Freehand cutting is time-consuming and leads to hesitation and uneven pressure.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Read: <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-cut-perfectly-round-air-dry-clay-bases-using-household-templates/">How to Cut Perfectly Round Air Dry Clay Bases Using Household Templates</a></em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to cut edges every time in air dry clay</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Follow the steps below to avoid getting torn edges and achieve nice and clean cuts every single time.</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Apply a little bit of water when kneading the air dry clay</strong>: Too much water means the clay becomes more sticky and grabs the blade.</li>

<li><strong>Let the air dry clay rest for a few minutes after rolling</strong>: When the clay slab rests for a few minutes, the water will evaporate and the potential for blade drag will decrease.</li>

<li><strong>Use the &#8220;Press, Don&#8217;t Drag&#8221; technique</strong>: When cutting the wet clay slab, do not drag the blade on the table. Plunge the blade straight down into the wet clay and take it out again; plunge and take the blade out for clean cuts. Dragging horizontally through sticky wet clay forms blunt and torn edges.</li>

<li><strong>Wipe your blade between every cut</strong>: Don’t let previously cut air dry clay particles build up on the knife. They make torn edges on the next cut you make. </li>
</ol>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to smooth out a ragged edge</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the cuts you made are clean but have some ragged edges, there is an easy way to fix that.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dip your index finger in the water and glide around the edges of the wet clay gently and slowly to smooth out the edges even more.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make sure not to leave fingerprints on the wet clay slab while doing this. Do not use too much water. Just tapping your finger in the water is enough.</p>

<div class="kb-row-layout-wrap kb-row-layout-id4721_2f7efb-c3 alignnone has-theme-palette8-background-color kt-row-has-bg wp-block-kadence-rowlayout"><div class="kt-row-column-wrap kt-has-1-columns kt-row-layout-equal kt-tab-layout-inherit kt-mobile-layout-row kt-row-valign-top">

</div></div>

</div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now you know how to make clean cuts and get sharp edges in air dry clay without tearing. I learned that after making my failed pineapple trinket tray project. But I never give up. Soon I’ll make another pineapple trinket tray with air dry clay and try to get clean and sharp edges following the above techniques. I’ll update you about that. 🍍</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let me know in the comments if you have a better technique to get nice and clean cuts. We&#8217;re all here to learn.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As beginners, it&#8217;s okay if you couldn’t achieve clean and sharp edges. Even I couldn’t do it on my first try. So, it&#8217;s okay. Let’s learn from our mistakes and build better next time like a champ! Cheers! 🤟🏾</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Warping is one of the main issues I have faced especially when making my air dry clay trays. This happened for one of my papaya trinket trays. 🥣</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At first I was curious because the tray base of wet clay I made was totally flat before letting it dry. But after two days, when I took the tray for painting, I noticed it wobbled on the table. 🧐</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4517_229d3c-e0"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="433" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0632-1024x433.webp" alt="warped papaya trinket tray" class="kb-img wp-image-4518" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0632-1024x433.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0632-300x127.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0632-768x325.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0632.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>warped papaya trinket tray</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I was 100 percent sure it was not like this before drying. So, I did my investigation to find out why this happened.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This situation is called the air dry clay warping and it happens due to uneven drying. Basically, a part of your air dry clay project dries faster than the rest, creating tension between the areas that results in warping.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4517_27275e-8f"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="691" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/final-result-papaya-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-2-691x1024.webp" alt="front side of my papaya trinket tray" class="kb-img wp-image-4519" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/final-result-papaya-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-2-691x1024.webp 691w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/final-result-papaya-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-2-202x300.webp 202w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/final-result-papaya-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-2-768x1139.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/final-result-papaya-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-2-1036x1536.webp 1036w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/final-result-papaya-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-2.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px" /><figcaption>front side of my papaya trinket tray</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since then, I have changed the way I make and dry my air dry clay trays. Now no wobble on the table and no continuous rattle sound during painting and sealing the trays. ✨</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’m also a beginner air dry clay artist like you. Therefore, I won’t give you complex methods that are hard to follow. I literally hate them.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let me show you why warping happens and how you can easily prevent it with simple steps.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why do air dry clay trays warp in the first place?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay warps due to uneven drying.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When your air dry clay tray sits on the table for drying the top area dries faster than the bottom area due to high airflow exposure. Therefore, the top area shrinks faster than the bottom, this uneven shrinkage causes the tray to warp.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4517_6ff3a1-3c"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/how-air-dry-clay-trays-warp-1024x768.webp" alt="how air dry clay trays warp" class="kb-img wp-image-4521" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/how-air-dry-clay-trays-warp-1024x768.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/how-air-dry-clay-trays-warp-300x225.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/how-air-dry-clay-trays-warp-768x576.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/how-air-dry-clay-trays-warp-500x375.webp 500w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/how-air-dry-clay-trays-warp.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>how air dry clay trays warp</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">More airflow = more moisture evaporation = faster drying.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Can we stop moisture evaporation from air dry clay? No, we cannot! We can&#8217;t place it in a vacuum.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay is a porous material with lots of moisture inside. It shrinks as it dries because of the moisture evaporation. That’s the nature of the material.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another reason your air dry clay tray warps is that you keep the tray in the sunlight for drying. Due to sunlight, the tray starts to dry faster. But the problem is the top area that is open to sunlight dries so much faster than the bottom. This results in uneven drying and warps the tray.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Read: <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-long-does-air-dry-clay-take-to-dry/">How Long Does Air Dry Clay Take to Dry? (And How to Speed It Up)</a></em></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why air dry clay trays mostly warp upwards?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Generally air dry clay trays warp upward in the middle during drying. Rarely, some trays bow downwards, but most are upwards.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-i-made-a-papaya-trinket-tray-with-air-dry-clay/">papaya trinket tray</a> was also warped upward and I was super frustrated and didn’t even know what went wrong.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I always thought, why do most air dry clay trays warp upwards making a U-shape?</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4517_cfd2f5-81"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="513" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0634-1024x513.webp" alt="warped papaya trinket tray" class="kb-img wp-image-4520" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0634-1024x513.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0634-300x150.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0634-768x385.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0634.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>warped papaya trinket tray</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know you have the same question. Don’t worry friends, I’ll explain this as simply as I can taking two scenarios.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Scenario 1:</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As we already know, when the top area of is shrinking, its length will be shorter than the bottom area.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The only way for a material to have a short top and a long bottom is to curve into a &#8220;U&#8221; shape. Isn’t it? Shrinking of the top pulls the outer edges of your air dry clay tray upward.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Scenario 2:</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You made an air dry clay tray with curved walls around the edge and let the tray dry on the table. When drying, the walls around the edges are more exposed to more airflow from all sides. Therefore, the walls around the edges dry and shrink faster than rest of the clay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The top middle area only exposed to air from the top and the bottom area has no opening for air to flow.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now walls around the edges work as a tightening belt little by little. Walls shrink faster and squeeze inward on the wet, full-sized center. The bottom area is blocked by the table, squeezing from all sides and the top middle area should release the pressure. It has only one escape, which is to pop upward in the middle. This creates a dome or &#8220;hump.&#8221;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4517_0bfbcd-07"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="672" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0662-1024x672.webp" alt="how trinket trays warp upward due to the pressure comes from the edges" class="kb-img wp-image-4522" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0662-1024x672.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0662-300x197.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0662-768x504.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0662.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>how curved trays warp upward due to the pressure that comes from the edges</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I think now you are crystal clear why our air dry clay warps when drying and why they mostly warp upwards, right? 💡</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Also read, <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-prevent-air-dry-clay-trays-from-cracking-while-drying/">How to Prevent Air Dry Clay Trays from Cracking While Drying</a></em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Proven methods to dry curved clay trays without warping</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now let’s discuss how you can stop your curved air dry clay from warping. 🛠️</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’m going to tell you 4 methods I used, but the first one is the most important one that I follow the most.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trust me! It’s not hard.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Method 1: the &#8220;Flip and rotate&#8221; technique</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do not let your curved air dry clay stay at the same position from start to end when drying. I’ll explain what I meant by that.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After you make the tray, the first few hours of drying are super important because moisture starts to evaporate from wet clay at a high rate. Eventually, the drying rate will decrease because of the low amount of moisture inside.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you keep your air dry clay only facing upward all the time, the airflow is exposed to the top area only which makes the top area dry faster than the bottom. 💨</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Therefore, make sure to flip and turn your curved air dry clay trays over every 30 to 60 minutes during the first few hours of drying so both sides dry evenly.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You only have to do this several times. No need to focus on it the whole day long. Just do it a couple of times once the tray is firm to handle.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>For example, when I was drying my <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-i-made-a-banana-trinket-tray-with-air-dry-clay/">banana trinket tray</a>, in the first hour I placed it upside and then I flipped it, giving the bottom room to breathe. Then after two hours I repeated the process and then I did the same the next day. That’s it. Don’t overthink! Just do it whenever you can, but don’t forget.</em></p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4517_106763-80"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/banana-trinket-tray-768x1024.webp" alt="banana trinket tray" class="kb-img wp-image-4524" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/banana-trinket-tray-768x1024.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/banana-trinket-tray-225x300.webp 225w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/banana-trinket-tray-1152x1536.webp 1152w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/banana-trinket-tray.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>banana trinket tray</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the easiest way you can avoid your tray from warping. When the top and bottom of your tray dry at the same rate, they all shrink evenly with no tension building up, so no warp happens.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I didn’t even know this method when I was making my papaya trinket tray and it ended up warping. But from then on, when I was working on my <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-make-an-air-dry-clay-strawberry-trinket-tray/">strawberry trinket tray</a>, banana trinket tray and others, I made sure to follow the flip and rotate technique when drying. So, no wiggle on the tabletop.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4517_21eb08-db"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="542" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-2-542x1024.webp" alt="papaya tray that warped when drying" class="kb-img wp-image-4523" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-2-542x1024.webp 542w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-2-159x300.webp 159w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-2-768x1451.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-2-813x1536.webp 813w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-2-1084x2048.webp 1084w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-2.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px" /><figcaption>papaya tray that warped when drying</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Method 2: slowing down the drying process</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don&#8217;t place your air dry clay tray in the sunlight or outside in the air when drying. Yes, it makes the clay dry faster. But this increases the moisture evaporation rate of the outside area of the tray more than inside. ☀️</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As moisture evaporates, outside layers of clay shrink faster than the inside, causing uneven shrinkage. This uneven shrinkage makes your curved air dry clay tray warp. 📉</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To avoid that, place the clay inside and wrap it with a loose plastic bag or lightly damp cloth. This slows down the moisture evaporation speed of your air dry clay tray, resulting in even drying and even shrinkage. So, the tray won’t warp.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Method 3: Weighting the base down</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Place a bag of rice or sand on the middle of the tray base when it is drying to keep the tray base flat.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don’t place items that are too heavy because it can misshape your wet clay. ⚖️</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Follow this method with caution because the clay area under the weight will dry super slow because moisture has nowhere to evaporate.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I prefer the flip and turn method over this because this one may damage your tray base, especially if it&#8217;s a trinket tray.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Method 4: Elevate your tray when drying</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Place your curved air dry clay tray on a <a href="https://www.dreamalittlebigger.com/post/build-hanging-drying-racks-for-your-crafty-projects.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wire rack</a> or mesh when drying so airflow can reach the bottom.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This makes the bottom of your tray breathable and helps it to dry at the same rate as the top.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4517_611abb-9c"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="654" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0635-1024x654.webp" alt="see how elevated my papaya tray is due to warp" class="kb-img wp-image-4525" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0635-1024x654.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0635-300x192.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0635-768x490.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0635.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>see, how elevated my papaya tray is due to warp</figcaption></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can you fix air dry clay that has already warped?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What if the damage is already done and you&#8217;re with your warped air dry clay tray? There are several ways you can fix this. 🩹</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Method 1: Add more clay to the bottom</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, tap the bottom of your tray with a little bit of water and make it wet. Then score the bottom area using a scoring tool or a toothpick.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next, take a fresh small clay piece, knead it and score the area that is going to attach to the bottom of the tray.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tap a little bit of water over the scored area (or apply a clay and water mixture called “slip”) and attach it gently. Press lightly and hold it until the clay is attached.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Smooth out the bottom with your fingers and let it dry.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the clay tray is fully dried, sand with fine-grit sandpaper to remove unevenness.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the best way to fix a warped, curved air dry clay tray.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Method 2: Sanding down the bottom</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the warped elevation is so little, sand the edges with a fine grit sandpaper once the tray is fully dried until the tray base becomes flat.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do this carefully without damaging the shape of your tray.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final thoughts</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even though you’re in a hurry, your air dry clay tray is not. Let it dry slowly and flip the sides while drying for even moisture evaporation.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trying to fix the warped tray is so much harder than you think because dried air dry clay does not like to fit with fresh clay piece.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The air dry clay tray project you made for hours can be ruined if it is warped. Therefore, always focus on drying. Don’t let your project be like my papaya trinket tray project.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’ll see you again with more useful tips that I learn during this journey. Cheers! 🤟🏾</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You spent hours and hours working to make a beautiful air dry clay tray and let it dry before painting, but you find a massive crack down the middle the next morning. You know how frustrating that sounds?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This happened when I was drying my <a href="https://clayandme.com/why-my-first-air-dry-clay-rabbit-failed/">first air dry clay rabbit project</a> (not a tray project). Due to the cracks, the rabbit’s head, arms, and legs fell apart upon drying. I literally cried and was about to give up on air dry clay because that was my first project.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4302_f2e1ef-00"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="767" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-1024x767.webp" alt="air dry clay rabbit after dried.. pieces fell apart" class="kb-img wp-image-4303" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-1024x767.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-300x225.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-768x575.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-500x375.webp 500w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>air dry clay rabbit after dried.. pieces fell apart</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a beginner, I face lots of cracking issues when I’m working with air dry clay because we don’t know how to keep the moisture level steady.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes, as beginners, we add too much water and the clay ended up cracking due to uneven shrinkage upon water evaporation. But when we add too little water, the clay ends up cracking because the edges of the tray are too dry and tend to split.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4302_250a3f-0a"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="838" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/avocado-trinket-tray-after-drying-1-838x1024.webp" alt="avocado trinket tray after drying" class="kb-img wp-image-4304" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/avocado-trinket-tray-after-drying-1-838x1024.webp 838w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/avocado-trinket-tray-after-drying-1-246x300.webp 246w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/avocado-trinket-tray-after-drying-1-768x938.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/avocado-trinket-tray-after-drying-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px" /><figcaption>avocado trinket tray after drying</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Therefore, maintaining a steady moisture level is a must when working with air dry clay to avoid it from cracking. I think now I’m getting good at this and can make things that do not crack when drying.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="i made a cute papaya tray out of air dry clay" width="720" height="405" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/v39xAAsll4Y?start=166&amp;feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let me tell you how to stop this cracking issue, which is literally a headache that ruins our beautiful trinket trays.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why does air dry clay crack in the first place?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, we need to identify why the hell cracks occur. Without finding the root cause of this cracking issue on air dry clay, we can’t find a solution. 🔍</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The enemy of air dry clay is moisture. But without moisture, we can&#8217;t even make the clay soft and shape it. So, it&#8217;s an enemy that we should do business but with some limits lol.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay cracks due to the imbalance of its moisture level.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4302_d8e2f4-e8"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="542" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-1-542x1024.webp" alt="papaya tray base made with air dry clay after drying" class="kb-img wp-image-4305" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-1-542x1024.webp 542w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-1-159x300.webp 159w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-1-768x1451.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-1-813x1536.webp 813w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-1-1084x2048.webp 1084w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/papaya-tray-base-made-with-air-dry-clay-after-drying-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px" /><figcaption>papaya tray base made with air dry clay after drying</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay is a very porous material. Lots of moisture and air bubbles are trapped inside its porous structure.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you make a trinket tray, decor item or any other project with air dry clay and let it dry before you paint, the water inside the clay evaporates and the clay gets dry.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So drying is the stage we need to be careful of.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the air dry clay outside area which is exposed to air dries faster than the damp clay inside, the tension pulls the clay apart, causing cracks.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Upon drying air dry clay shrinks because it loses water. Shrinkage causes <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-prevent-warping-when-drying-curved-air-dry-clay-trays/">air dry clay to warp</a>. But if the outside area dries faster than the inside, it causes uneven shrinkage due to different drying rates in different areas. This means the outside area of your tray warps faster than the inside. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to physics, this will cause tension between the clays. When the tension gets too high clay starts to crack.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don’t worry, I’ll summarize what I told, it seems too much right?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here I have listed down common reasons why air dry clay cracks,</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Uneven drying</strong>: The clay should dry at the same rate everywhere.</li>

<li><strong>Uneven thickness</strong>: Thickness should be the same everywhere. Thinner clay parts dry faster and shrink faster than thicker clay parts. This pulls the clay apart as internal moisture remains trapped.</li>

<li><strong>Drying too fast</strong>: Placing air dry clay tray in direct sunlight or using heat lamps or heaters causes outer layers to shrink too fast, even before inner layers adjust.</li>

<li><strong>Too much water</strong>: Adding too much water when kneading, attaching and <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-get-smooth-even-edges-on-air-dry-clay-trays/">smoothing the clay</a> means high evaporation, which means higher shrinkage. When the shrinkage is increased, tension built up inside the clay is high.</li>
</ul>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4302_aaa8cf-ce"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="567" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/trinket-dray-after-drying-for-2-days-1024x567.webp" alt="trinket tray after drying" class="kb-img wp-image-3977" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/trinket-dray-after-drying-for-2-days-1024x567.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/trinket-dray-after-drying-for-2-days-300x166.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/trinket-dray-after-drying-for-2-days-768x425.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/trinket-dray-after-drying-for-2-days.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>trinket tray after drying</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now let me tell you how to stop this with experience.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tips to stop air dry clay from cracking</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’re the simple and easy methods you can follow to stop air dry clay tray from cracking,</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Maintain the same thickness everywhere</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you’re making a project like a trinket tray, make sure all the edges and the tray rim and decorations you add have the same thickness.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4302_ed27af-c0"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="860" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/attaching-tray-rim-to-the-base-1-860x1024.webp" alt="attaching tray rim to the base" class="kb-img wp-image-4161" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/attaching-tray-rim-to-the-base-1-860x1024.webp 860w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/attaching-tray-rim-to-the-base-1-252x300.webp 252w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/attaching-tray-rim-to-the-base-1-768x915.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/attaching-tray-rim-to-the-base-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px" /><figcaption>attaching tray rim to the base</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can make same thickness items by attaching silicone or rubber guide rings to your rolling pin, or use acrylic guide rails.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4302_dd6324-db"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="883" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/removable-siliconerubber-rings-in-different-thickness-1-1024x883.webp" alt="removable silicone/rubber rings in different thickness" class="kb-img wp-image-4307" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/removable-siliconerubber-rings-in-different-thickness-1-1024x883.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/removable-siliconerubber-rings-in-different-thickness-1-300x259.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/removable-siliconerubber-rings-in-different-thickness-1-768x662.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/removable-siliconerubber-rings-in-different-thickness-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>removable silicone/rubber rings in different thickness</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Limit the water usage</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Adding too much weakens the air dry clay structure and forms cracks. When you’re kneading the clay, do not put water directly on the clay. Use a spray bottle or wet your palms. Then most will be absorbed to your skin and only a little amount will touch the clay. 💧</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Less water means less shrinkage upon drying and the clay will not crack because no tension.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you’re smoothing the edges of your tray, dip one of your fingers in a cup of water and use it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Never ever soak the clay, no matter what. Always wet your index finger and use it.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dry slowly</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don’t expose air dry clay tray to direct sunlight or a heater if you’re in a hurry and want to dry your air dry clay project faster. Keep it in a cool well-ventilated area for slow drying. 🌬️</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Slow drying means water evaporation rate of the outside and inside layers of clay is almost the same which means no uneven shrinkage, no tension buildup and finally no cracks.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I place my wet air dry clay tray on the same PVC mat I use for making it. Since PVC has a non-porous surface it helps to give a nice and smooth finish on the clay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Plus, air cannot get inside the PVC mat and the bottom of the tray while drying. I flip the tray project from time to time upon drying and let different areas dry on my PVC mat.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4302_a245f2-af"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="896" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/avocado-tray-after-smoothing-896x1024.webp" alt="avocado tray after smoothing" class="kb-img wp-image-4164" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/avocado-tray-after-smoothing-896x1024.webp 896w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/avocado-tray-after-smoothing-263x300.webp 263w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/avocado-tray-after-smoothing-768x877.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/avocado-tray-after-smoothing.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px" /><figcaption>avocado tray after smoothing</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Therefore, make sure to gently flip your tray periodically to let both top and bottom areas dry by releasing moisture at nearly the same rate evenly.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is valuable when you’re making trays with air dry clay. When you check after 2 days, the bottom of the tray can still be wet if you forgot to flip it while drying.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another method is to drape a plastic grocery bag over the tray and let it dry. This creates a different humid environment inside the plastic bag and lets the air dry clay project dry evenly for several days.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Be slow and steady when drying for better results!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Make strong bonds</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Follow score and slip method when attaching air dry clay pieces. When I was making my rabbit, I didn’t use it and ended up with parts falling apart when drying.</p>

<div class="kb-row-layout-wrap kb-row-layout-id4302_ef6b9d-ee alignnone wp-block-kadence-rowlayout"><div class="kt-row-column-wrap kt-has-1-columns kt-row-layout-equal kt-tab-layout-inherit kt-mobile-layout-row kt-row-valign-top">

<div class="wp-block-kadence-column kadence-column4302_5bdc2a-24"><div class="kt-inside-inner-col">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Score and slip method means first score the surfaces of air dry clay pieces using the cutting tool you need to attach. Then, apply a clay and water mixture which is also known as the “slip” over the scored areas (I tap the scored areas with water, that’s also fine) and gently press the clay pieces together. Slip or water acts like a glue and scoring helps to make a good grip with good adhesion between the surfaces.&nbsp;</strong></p>
</div></div>

</div></div>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4302_1b3907-3d"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="948" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-rim-before-attach-it-to-tray-base.webp" alt="scoring the rim before attach it to tray base" class="kb-img wp-image-4306" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-rim-before-attach-it-to-tray-base.webp 1000w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-rim-before-attach-it-to-tray-base-300x284.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/scoring-the-rim-before-attach-it-to-tray-base-768x728.webp 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>scoring the rim before attach it to tray base</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Score and slip method makes a strong bond between air dry clay pieces which does not crack or lose joints when drying.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Plus, when you’re attaching two air dry clay parts add a thin coil seam around the joint and press it gently and smooth it out. This thin clay coil works as a cement for the joints and helps to keep parts together.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because of the thin clay coil clay parts won’t separate due to shrinkage when drying. I apply it when I’m attaching the tray base to the tray rim. Results were so good. Make sure to smooth it well using your fingers.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4302_e085b4-89"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="635" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0165-2-1024x635.webp" alt="crack free trinket trays I made" class="kb-img wp-image-4308" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0165-2-1024x635.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0165-2-300x186.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0165-2-768x476.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/IMG_0165-2.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>crack free trinket trays I made</figcaption></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to fix a cracked air dry clay tray</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What if you’re too late. What if your air dry clay project already got cracks and you need to find solutions. Don’t worry guys and gals I got you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Simply use the “Slip”.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Take excess air dry clay and insert it to a little bottle and pour same amount of water into it. Then mix clay and water thoroughly until it makes a paste which is called the “slip”. Now fill the cracks in your tray with the slip you made.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After covering all the cracks, let it dry for 24-48 hours and sand with a <a href="https://www.thespruce.com/choose-the-right-sandpaper-grit-1822681" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fine grit</a> sandpaper to remove bumps and smooth the surface. Painting can cover up all the weird marks that occurred due to slip. Simple as that! ✨</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But I highly recommend you not to do the actions that cause cracks in the first place. <strong>Uncracked air dry clay tray is always stronger and better in value than a cracked project that is fixed with slip.</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final thoughts</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even though your beautiful air dry clay tray is crack free, you can&#8217;t leave it as it is. Painting and sealing or just sealing, is a must to protect it long term from the moisture.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Otherwise, moisture will get inside air dry clay, weaken the clay and form cracks on the surface. <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-seal-and-waterproof-air-dry-clay-trinket-trays/">Seal and waterproof your air dry clay tray</a> properly to get rid of cracks even after you complete the project. I hope you’ll have a crack free beautiful clay journey haha 😂Cheers! 🤟🏾</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know from experience how annoying it is when your air dry clay keeps sticking to the table once you roll it.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I was making my second air dry clay project, which is a <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-i-made-my-first-air-dry-clay-trinket-tray/">trinket tray</a>, I had to redo the kneading and rolling process 4 times, yes 4 freaking times because every time I tried to lift the clay piece after rolling, it got stuck to the table. Even at one point, I thought of quitting air dry clay and switching to something else like polymer clay. </p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4225_eab421-7e"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="573" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-1-1-1024x573.webp" alt="clay stuck to the surface - failed attempt" class="kb-img wp-image-4226" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-1-1-1024x573.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-1-1-300x168.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-1-1-768x429.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-1-1-480x270.webp 480w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-1-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>clay stuck to the surface &#8211; failed attempt </figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finally, my wife came out and rescued me. The technique she told me to follow saved my clay artist dream. Because of her advice on handling clay, now I’m able to knead, roll, cut and lift up air dry clay without sticking it to the table. ✨</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="i tried making an air dry clay trinket tray &amp; sealed it with nail polish 💅" width="720" height="405" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-lWENDtKF5I?start=2&amp;feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let me tell you what that is and how you can easily apply it for any air dry clay project you want.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why air dry clay is prone to sticking</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay is prone to sticking because moisture, fine binders or glue inside come outside upon kneading and rolling the clay and activate when it becomes wet.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are the common reasons I found why air dry clay sticks,</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>High moisture content</strong>: Air dry clay contains high moisture content and it becomes wetter when you add a little bit of water when kneading to make it softer. Water acts like an adhesive agent against hands, tools, and the table. 💧</li>

<li><strong>Water-soluble fine binders: </strong>Air dry clay contains organic binders such as cellulose or starch-based glues. They become really tacky when exposed to moisture.</li>

<li><strong>Working on an ultra smooth surface: </strong>If the table you’re working on is an acrylic mat or glass, which are super smooth, it creates an airtight seal that acts like a suction cup against the wet clay. Therefore, clay tears apart when you’re trying to lift up the clay after rolling.</li>

<li><strong>Working on an unsealed surface</strong>: If the working table is an unsealed wood or canvas, they absorb the moisture of your air dry clay while rolling. Raw wood fibers create a mechanical bond between the clay and the table. This makes air dry clay stick in the wood grain or dry out too fast at the bottom layers. This doesn’t work like suction cups but clay tends to crack or rip when pulled up.</li>
</ul>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4225_b9fd76-39"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="570" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-2-1-1024x570.webp" alt="clay stuck to the surface - failed attempt 2" class="kb-img wp-image-4227" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-2-1-1024x570.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-2-1-300x167.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-2-1-768x428.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-2-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>clay stuck to the surface &#8211; failed attempt 2</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay has a porous structure. Due to the pressure you put on top of the clay while rolling, the water and fine binding agents come out through those porous holes and seals around each hole, creating a vacuum.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Likewise, rolling creates a large number of small, strong suction areas against a sealed, ultra smooth table surface. So, when you try to lift it up after rolling or shaping, it makes the thin clay too weak to peel off cleanly and tears apart.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But why does air dry clay stick to our palms? The same principle, my friend. 🤔</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you take it out and knead the clay using your hands, the moisture inside the air dry clay warms up and water and fine binding agents release to the surface.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is why air dry clay sticks to your hand, especially after you wet it and add a little water before kneading to make it softer.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Therefore, in order to avoid air dry clay from sticking to the table, you need to be concerned about its moisture level, and the condition of the table surface you’re working on and most importantly, there’s a simple technique you can follow, which I learned the hard way and will explain later.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4225_6321c6-2e"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="570" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-3-1-1024x570.webp" alt="clay stuck to the surface - failed attempt 3" class="kb-img wp-image-4228" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-3-1-1024x570.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-3-1-300x167.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-3-1-768x428.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-stuck-to-the-surface-failed-attempt-3-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>clay stuck to the surface &#8211; failed attempt 3</figcaption></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Best surfaces for rolling air dry clay</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do not pick a sealed, ulta smooth, glossy surface for working with air dry clay. The clay will stick terribly and tear apart when lifting.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead, use one of these surfaces,</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">PVC mats</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I use an A4-size <a href="https://clayandme.com/why-i-use-a-pvc-mat-for-air-dry-clay-projects/">PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) mat</a> for working with air dry clay. It is smooth (not ultra smooth), easy to peel, and durable. Most importantly, easy to remove and leftover air dry clay and clean.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Currently, I have made 2 trinket trays and one koi fish pond with this PVC mat, and it didn’t cause me any trouble. 🐟</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4225_327ad2-a6"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="571" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/rolling-the-clay-piece-1-1024x571.webp" alt="PVC mat I use" class="kb-img wp-image-4229" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/rolling-the-clay-piece-1-1024x571.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/rolling-the-clay-piece-1-300x167.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/rolling-the-clay-piece-1-768x428.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/rolling-the-clay-piece-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>PVC mat I use</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Silicone mats</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Silicone mats are also a top choice surface to work with air dry clay. They have self healing ability, which leaves no scratches and knife marks. Silicone mats do not stick to air dry clay. 🛠️</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Plus, I have found that silicone mats come in different sizes and colors.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Unbleached cotton canvas &amp; duck cloth</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unbleached cotton canvas and duck cloth are great to work with air dry clay because they are heavy. They don’t move here and there when the clay moves because they do not stick with clay. 🧶</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Untreated weave stops wet air dry clay from forming a suction-like seal. Plus they allow clay pieces to peel away easily.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The reason for using unbleached cotton over bleached cotton canvas for air dry clay is because the bleaching process uses harsh agents (like chlorine or hydrogen peroxide) and optical whiteners that destroy the natural integrity and tensile strength of cotton fibers.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Parchment paper and wax paper</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you could find the above materials, parchment papers and wax papers are also good to work with air dry clay. But I have to tell you they are not the best. They don’t provide the same quality like the materials I told you about above. 📄</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are budget friendly options and wax paper tends to leave residue as well. So, be cautious.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I highly recommend you to use a silicone mat or PVC mat or unbleached cotton or duck cloth for better results. ✅</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The &#8220;rotate and flip&#8221; method for non-stick rolling</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now I’m gonna tell you a failproof method which stops your air dry clay from sticking to the surface while rolling. 🔄</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I follow this method for every single one of my projects after I failed several times when making my first trinket tray.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you place the air dry clay on the surface after kneading for rolling, amke sure to turn it, flip it and rotate it 90 degrees after each rolling rounds.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4225_340949-15"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="572" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-tray-base-lift-up-smoothly-1-1024x572.webp" alt="clay tray base lift up smoothly" class="kb-img wp-image-4230" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-tray-base-lift-up-smoothly-1-1024x572.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-tray-base-lift-up-smoothly-1-300x168.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-tray-base-lift-up-smoothly-1-768x429.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/clay-tray-base-lift-up-smoothly-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>clay tray base lift up smoothly</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, do the rolling for 2 up, 2 down and stop. Then, lift the clay piece and flip it and again continue rolling 2 up, 2 down and stop. Then, turn the clay upside down and again continue rolling 2 up, 2 down and stop. Next rotate the clay piece for 90 degrees and again continue rolling. Repeat this process until the clay piece reaches the thickness you want.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since we keep lifting the clay up and change its position after several rolling rounds the air dry clay won’t get a single chance to stick to the working surface.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You simply just have to flip, turn and rotate air dry clay piece every 2-3 passes of the rolling pin.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Easy right? My wife gave this advice and it works so good. No clay tear apart and can get the thickness you want without worrying about clay adhesion to the surface. 🙌</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What to do if your air dry clay is still sticking</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes not a single solution can fix problems of all the people. If you still find your air dry clay is sticking, try,</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Apply cornstarch or powder on to the surface</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before you start rolling the clay piece, add some powder or cornstarch on to the surface and spread it all over using your fingers.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4225_d5e2b4-78"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="570" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/adding-powder-to-the-surface-1-1024x570.webp" alt="adding powder to the surface" class="kb-img wp-image-4231" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/adding-powder-to-the-surface-1-1024x570.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/adding-powder-to-the-surface-1-300x167.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/adding-powder-to-the-surface-1-768x428.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/adding-powder-to-the-surface-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>adding powder to the surface</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then place the air dry clay piece and start rolling. Here, cornstarch or powder work as a barrier which avoids air dry clay from contacting the surface. 🧂</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Therefore, binding agents inside air dry clay don’t contact with the table and the surface cannot create an airtight seal that acts like a suction cup against the wet clay.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stop clay from sticking to your rolling pin</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now you know how to stop air dry clay from sticking to the surface. But what if it still sticks to your rolling pin?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your rolling pin can be a wooden one or acrylic one like mine. Here are solutions,</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>For wooden rolling pin</strong>&nbsp;</h4>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Wax it with <a href="https://bestbees.com/uses-for-beeswax/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">beeswax </a>or mineral oil to make a barrier between the rolling pin and the clay.</li>

<li>Let the rolling pin dry completely because a wet wooden rolling pin sticks with wet air dry clay.</li>

<li>Place a piece of parchment paper or plastic wrap over the clay when rolling.</li>
</ul>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">For acrylic rolling pin</h4>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Dab cornstarch or powder over the acrylic pin before rolling to work it as a barrier.</li>

<li>Place a piece of parchment paper or plastic wrap over the clay when rolling.</li>
</ul>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4225_1e0dcf-23"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="971" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/rolling-air-dry-clay-1-971x1024.webp" alt="rolling air dry clay with acrylic rolling pin" class="kb-img wp-image-4232" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/rolling-air-dry-clay-1-971x1024.webp 971w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/rolling-air-dry-clay-1-285x300.webp 285w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/rolling-air-dry-clay-1-768x810.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/rolling-air-dry-clay-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 971px) 100vw, 971px" /><figcaption>rolling air dry clay with <a href="https://clayandme.com/do-you-need-an-acrylic-rolling-pin-for-air-dry-clay/">acrylic rolling pin</a></figcaption></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to safely lift air dry clay up that is already stuck</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have faced this problem when I was working on my first trinket tray project. But unfortunately the clay was torn apart each time I tried to lift it up when it was stuck to the surface. 😟</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But later I knew, there’s a possibility to rescue the clay without tearing apart by using a flexible blade. You need to carefully sneak the blade in between the clay and surface and lift it up carefully.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Or you can wait until the clay dries. Upon drying the moisture of air dry clay evaporates and shrinks the clay. Upon shrinking the grip between the clay and surface will loosen and you can take the clay out easily. But the sad thing is you have to wait 24-48 hours until the clay is dry. ⏳</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you face this kind of situation, I recommend you to take the clay out little by little even after it tore apart and start again. That’s what I did. Time wasted but I didn’t have to wait for 2 days to complete the project.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4225_75c5cd-0e"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1001" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/final-result-trinket-tray-1-1001x1024.webp" alt="final result - trinket tray" class="kb-img wp-image-4233" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/final-result-trinket-tray-1-1001x1024.webp 1001w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/final-result-trinket-tray-1-293x300.webp 293w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/final-result-trinket-tray-1-768x786.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/final-result-trinket-tray-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1001px) 100vw, 1001px" /><figcaption>final result &#8211; trinket tray</figcaption></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Final thoughts</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I use a PVC mat as my working surface. Likewise I want to tell you to switch to a quality air dry friendly material like a silicone mat, PVC sheet or unbleached cotton to avoid the clay from sticking.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The procedure of taking the stuck clay out is frustrating and boring. Plus, make sure to follow my flip and turn technique. I guarantee you won’t go wrong. Happy making my friend! Cheers! 🤟🏾</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know, I know, this sounds controversial. I know you have seen hundreds of videos and articles of miniature projects completely done with air-dry clay. 🎨</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But let me tell you, in beginner terms, it&#8217;s better not to make tiny, cute, small, miniature projects with air-dry clay. I learned it by experience. 💡</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let me tell you why I said so:</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Challenges of miniature air dry clay sculpting</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re a beginner, it&#8217;s better not to use air-dry clay for miniature projects. Otherwise, you&#8217;ll end up like me when I did my first air-dry clay project. 🙃</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I tried to make a tiny rabbit with air-dry clay. The head was small, legs, arms, ears and everything. And finally, I ended up with fallen pieces that did not attach quite well. 🐇</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, some of them are <a href="https://clayandme.com/why-my-first-air-dry-clay-rabbit-failed/">skill issues</a>, but air-dry clay was also responsible for my ruined project.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3916_3db55f-be"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="767" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-1-1024x767.webp" alt="air dry clay rabbit after dried.. pieces fell apart" class="kb-img wp-image-3917" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-1-1024x767.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-1-300x225.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-1-768x575.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-1-500x375.webp 500w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>air dry clay rabbit after dried.. pieces fell apart</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are the unique challenges you might face when using air-dry clay for tiny projects:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Quick drying of air dry clay</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you’re making a small project with air-dry clay, you make small parts. Those small parts have higher surface area open to the outside world than what’s inside. Because of having high surface area open to the air, the clay will harden quickly by evaporating the moisture inside. 💨</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What basically happens is the miniature air-dry clay project dries even before you complete it.</p>

<div class="kb-row-layout-wrap kb-row-layout-id3916_ad9cda-26 alignnone wp-block-kadence-rowlayout"><div class="kt-row-column-wrap kt-has-2-columns kt-row-layout-equal kt-tab-layout-inherit kt-mobile-layout-equal kt-row-valign-top">

<div class="wp-block-kadence-column kadence-column3916_4ac31b-c4"><div class="kt-inside-inner-col">
<figure class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3916_a0274c-63 size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="490" height="729" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1.webp" alt="cracks on miniature air dry clay project" class="kb-img wp-image-3922" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1.webp 490w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1-202x300.webp 202w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px" /><figcaption>front side, cracks on miniature air dry clay project.<em> image credit: Reddit</em></figcaption></figure>
</div></div>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-column kadence-column3916_513ec4-d7 kb-section-dir-horizontal"><div class="kt-inside-inner-col">
<figure class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3916_87ec45-fe size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="440" height="680" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2.webp" alt="cracks on miniature air dry clay project " class="kb-img wp-image-3923" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2.webp 440w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2-194x300.webp 194w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px" /><figcaption>back side, cracks on miniature air dry clay project. <em>image credit: Reddit</em></figcaption></figure>
</div></div>

</div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, when you’re making a tiny rabbit, and make and shape the left ear of it and keep it aside to make and shape the right ear of it, the left ear dried fully and it has no moisture left inside to attach to the rabbit head. 😟</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="my first air dry clay project went horribly wrong! should i just stop? 😢" width="720" height="405" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/c8qwjVC7qQQ?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This rapid drying of miniature air-dry clay projects leads to cracks and a non-smooth surface. When the surface is not smooth, you can&#8217;t detail them well and the project looks ugly. 🥀</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think you’re making tiny ears or flower petals or thin fingers. They require blending after shaping. But what if they harden before you bend them? Definitely, the pieces will get cracked and it&#8217;s impossible to blend.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But when it comes to larger, chunky projects, the surface area open to the air is small compared to what’s inside.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Therefore, a higher amount of moisture is inside and the project won’t dry quickly, especially until you finish sculpting. Therefore, there’s enough time for detailing and smoothing. ✨</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3916_f6d4fd-1f"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="625" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/final-look-of-the-air-dry-clay-rabbit-before-drying-1-1024x625.webp" alt="final look of the air dry clay rabbit before drying" class="kb-img wp-image-3919" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/final-look-of-the-air-dry-clay-rabbit-before-drying-1-1024x625.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/final-look-of-the-air-dry-clay-rabbit-before-drying-1-300x183.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/final-look-of-the-air-dry-clay-rabbit-before-drying-1-768x468.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/final-look-of-the-air-dry-clay-rabbit-before-drying-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>final look of the air dry clay rabbit before drying</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Shrinkage and cracking</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We know air-dry clay shrinks when drying. The shrinkage is approximately 5%. Yes, it looks like a small percentage. But it is a huge amount and a huge distortion when your project is small. 📉</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fine lines and thin parts are mainly affected by this uneven shrinkage. Once the water evaporates, those thin tiny parts will snap or split.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I experienced this. One of the ears of my tiny rabbit fell off when I was attaching the other ear. When I touched the fallen ear, I felt it was hardened and there were tiny splits everywhere because of the uneven shrinkage. 💥</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you keep maintaining the moisture level of the tiny pieces until they fully attach, yes, there is a possibility of making a tiny project with air-dry clay. But as a beginner, I can&#8217;t do that and I know you can&#8217;t as well. It&#8217;s for professionals and experts. We’re not yet at that level. Lol. 😂</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Polymer clay and Greenstuff do not shrink and crack like air-dry clay. This is why they are widely considered best for miniature projects. ✔️</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3916_a5a1f0-1c"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="606" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/one-ear-fell-off-even-before-drying-1-1024x606.webp" alt="one ear fell off even before drying" class="kb-img wp-image-3918" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/one-ear-fell-off-even-before-drying-1-1024x606.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/one-ear-fell-off-even-before-drying-1-300x178.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/one-ear-fell-off-even-before-drying-1-768x454.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/one-ear-fell-off-even-before-drying-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>one ear fell off even before drying</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fragile and break easily</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since air-dry clay contains moisture and once it evaporates it gets hard and brittle, the tiny pieces made of air-dry clay are so fragile and tend to break easily even under small pressure. 🔨</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is why artists and professionals use polymer clay to make tiny sculptures.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It doesn&#8217;t get hard until it&#8217;s baked and once it gets hardened by baking, it does not break easily like air-dry clay even under pressure. 🔥</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know it seems like I&#8217;m telling you a lot of bad things about air-dry clay; sorry, as per my experience and from the things I found on the internet, it is not best for tiny projects. Simply use it for larger projects. Cost-effective, less shrinkage, and no cracking and breaking. Simple as that! 👍</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3916_bf19fa-01"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="671" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/small-rabbit-head-1-1024x671.webp" alt="small rabbit head" class="kb-img wp-image-3920" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/small-rabbit-head-1-1024x671.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/small-rabbit-head-1-300x197.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/small-rabbit-head-1-768x503.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/small-rabbit-head-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>small rabbit head</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hard to join</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tiny pieces made of air-dry clay give you a difficult time when joining them to the main body because where should you score? Score and slip is essential for <a href="https://clayandme.com/why-is-my-air-dry-clay-not-sticking-together/">joining air-dry clay pieces.</a> 🔗</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No score means they won’t attach well and will fall off when they’re drying.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This was exactly what happened to my rabbit project. The legs and arms of it were super small and I didn&#8217;t score enough; actually, there was no room for scoring because they were super tiny. You need to have eyes of a fly to score those tiny pieces. And eventually, all the parts of my tiny rabbit fell off when drying. 😭</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even after you score with all the difficulties, you need to add slip or tap with a little bit of water to the scored area before attaching. That is nearly impossible when your air-dry clay pieces are too small.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you tap water with your fingers or any other tool, the part will get stuck to your finger or that tool instead of the main body. This feels super frustrating and the worst part is you get a wrong feeling about air-dry clay which may end your dream of becoming an expert clay artist. 😤</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3916_695d8f-1a"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="690" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/shaping-rabbit-ears-1-1024x690.webp" alt="shaping rabbit ears" class="kb-img wp-image-3921" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/shaping-rabbit-ears-1-1024x690.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/shaping-rabbit-ears-1-300x202.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/shaping-rabbit-ears-1-768x518.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/shaping-rabbit-ears-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>shaping rabbit ears</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">No structural integrity (the &#8220;droop&#8221; effect)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do you really think air-dry clay can hold its weight when the project is small? No, it can&#8217;t. When you make tiny pieces, that can be a small body, arm, ear, eyes, with air-dry clay, the total weight of it is air-dry clay weight + water weight. Yes, when air-dry clay is fresh, it&#8217;s soft, squishy, but also heavy because it contains moisture. 💧</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you attach those small parts to the main body or main project, they probably will fall off under their own weight before they dry.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But when you’re working with a large project, the structural stability is so much higher and you will get good stability. 💪</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is why some artists insert thin wire armatures or toothpicks inside of small parts when they’re attaching them to the main body. Those wire armatures and toothpicks work as a skeleton to give the stability air-dry clay wants to keep the project steady without falling. 🦴</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Prone to accidents</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think your project is a small rabbit and you need to attach eyes. You attach one eye after scoring and tapping a little bit of water to one eyeball. 👀</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then you take the other eyeball and score, but when you’re tapping water, it accidentally touched the other eyeball you already attached and it stuck to your finger. Now both eyeballs are in your hand. 🤦</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This happens because air-dry clay sticks to warm hands. When you try to fix one thing, the nearby finished thing might get ruined and lose details. Hours of your work might get destroyed due to a tiny mistake. 🕒</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is another reason people go with polymer clay for miniature making because you don&#8217;t need to apply water to attach pieces. You just need a little bit of pressure.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The natural grain of air-dry clay looks chunky and ugly for tiny pieces like miniatures. 🏜️</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3916_499ab8-a3"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="672" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/fine-detailing-its-eyes-and-mouth-1024x672.webp" alt="fine detailing its eyes and mouth" class="kb-img wp-image-3898" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/fine-detailing-its-eyes-and-mouth-1024x672.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/fine-detailing-its-eyes-and-mouth-300x197.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/fine-detailing-its-eyes-and-mouth-768x504.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/fine-detailing-its-eyes-and-mouth.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>fine detailing its eyes and mouth</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Difficult to paint</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since air-dry clay mostly comes in white, grey, brown, or muddy-looking colors, when you make tiny projects, you need to use brushes for painting. 🖌️</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Painting tiny parts is difficult and you need to have good handling and practice. One wrong brush stroke can ruin your project.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Plus, the brushes you use need to be good because low-quality brushes are not good for fine detailing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Therefore, it&#8217;s better to have polymer clay since it comes in different colors, which is good for making tiny projects, and you don&#8217;t need to worry about painting. 🌈</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Better alternatives for air dry clay to make tiny projects</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because of all the above reasons, I know it&#8217;s frustrating to work with air-dry clay for tiny projects. But don&#8217;t give up on your hope of making miniatures using clay. If you’re a beginner, I have better options for you. 🌟</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Polymer clay</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Polymer clay is the best clay for miniatures and any other tiny project. It does not contain moisture like air-dry clay. Therefore, it does not dry under room temperature, only when it is baked. It is not as heavy as air-dry clay. 🏆</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With polymer clay, it is so much easier to make fine details on your tiny projects without losing the details you already made. No water, score, or slip needed before attaching pieces. Therefore, it&#8217;s easy to join tiny pieces.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stability is super high once the project is baked. No shrinkage at all and no fragility like air-dry clay. ✅</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also, it comes in different colors and therefore, you don&#8217;t need to worry about painting your tiny project. Because during painting, lots of mistakes can happen since the project is small.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can blend, mix, and make the color you want with polymer clay. Therefore, no need to worry about not having the color you want in a pre-purchased bundle.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The only con is polymer clay is more expensive than air-dry clay. But I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s much of an issue by looking at all the advantages you get by using polymer clay over air-dry clay when making a tiny project. 💰</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Greenstuff</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://kneadatite.com/how-to-use-green-stuff/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Greenstuff</a>, also known as Kneadatite, is a two-part epoxy putty that is ideal for making tiny sculptures and miniatures. 🟢</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It does not shrink like air-dry clay and it&#8217;s easy to make tiny fine details without making a mess.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With Greenstuff, you also can adjust the proportions of the two parts when you want different material properties for different parts of the tiny project.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3916_c7cd3f-49"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="709" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-2nd-3rd-and-4th-air-dry-clay-projects-after-failed-rabbit-project-1024x709.webp" alt="my 2nd, 3rd and 4th air dry clay projects after failed rabbit project" class="kb-img wp-image-3907" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-2nd-3rd-and-4th-air-dry-clay-projects-after-failed-rabbit-project-1024x709.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-2nd-3rd-and-4th-air-dry-clay-projects-after-failed-rabbit-project-300x208.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-2nd-3rd-and-4th-air-dry-clay-projects-after-failed-rabbit-project-768x532.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-2nd-3rd-and-4th-air-dry-clay-projects-after-failed-rabbit-project.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>my 2nd, 3rd and 4th air dry clay projects after failed rabbit project</figcaption></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tips for Sculpting Tiny Details with Air Dry Clay</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Maintain moisture by keeping the project damp with a damp sponge or spray bottle. Do not let the tiny pieces dry before completing the project. 💧</li>

<li>Use wire armatures or toothpicks when attaching tiny air-dry clay pieces to the main body. 📍</li>

<li>Always follow the Slip and Score method for making miniatures.</li>

<li>Use fine tools for detailing rather than using fingers. 🛠️</li>

<li>Don&#8217;t lose your patience. Haha. 😄</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Patience is Your Best Tool</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know what you’re thinking. If air-dry clay is this bad for tiny projects and miniatures, how do those big YouTubers and experts make tiny things with it?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The keyword is patience. If you can maintain moisture, use fine tools, finish the project before pieces get dried, and if you’re good at painting. Yes, you can make any tiny project with air-dry clay. ⏳</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’m not discouraging you, but if you’re a beginner like me, better to stick to large projects in the early days. This will improve your tool handling, clay handling, and you eventually know how much water you need for each project. 🎓</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you become good at those skills, yes, you can go for making tiny projects with air-dry clay. Until then, let polymer clay handle miniatures. That’s my advice.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Always keep in mind that anything is possible, but what you must do is practice regularly. Because practice makes you perfect! Cheers! 🍻</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know it&#8217;s frustrating to see the pieces you build, spending your time or sometimes hours, not stick together. This makes you feel so bad for using air dry clay for the project, and you’re probably thinking of switching to some other clay type. But hold on! 🛑</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What if I told you there is a way to fix this? Yes, air dry clay is not as tacky as polymer clay. But what if I told you there are simple techniques you can follow to attach air dry clay pieces, no matter how big or small they are?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I also learned this the hard way after my first project, which was a small rabbit made with air dry clay. The head, body, legs, and arms did not stick together quite well, and basically, each piece ended up falling apart when the project was drying.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3903_148aa5-3f"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="767" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-my-first-project-1024x767.webp" alt="air dry clay rabbit after dried.. pieces fell apart (my first project)" class="kb-img wp-image-3905" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-my-first-project-1024x767.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-my-first-project-300x225.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-my-first-project-768x575.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-my-first-project-500x375.webp 500w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/air-dry-clay-rabbit-after-dried.-pieces-fell-apart-my-first-project.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>air dry clay rabbit after dried.. pieces fell apart (my first project)</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I did my research and was able to find why this happened and how to overcome this. So, in my next projects, I was able to not think about this fear much because each piece I attached held quite well.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Main Reasons Your Air Dry Clay Pieces Fall Apart</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is no specific, single reason that can cause air dry clay pieces not to attach. Sometimes it can be one of the following reasons, or sometimes it can be more.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Based on my experience and the research I did, here are the main reasons your air dry clay is not sticking together:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">You Skipped the &#8220;Slip and Score&#8221; Method</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first law of bonding is that smooth surfaces do not attach together. Remember that! You need to create an adhesion between them to attach.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As you know, air dry clay contains moisture. Not only because you add a sip of water when shaping it, but it already contains moisture inside.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3903_d765dc-1a"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="977" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/scoring-the-tray-rim-before-attach-1024x977.webp" alt="scoring the tray rim before attach" class="kb-img wp-image-3906" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/scoring-the-tray-rim-before-attach-1024x977.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/scoring-the-tray-rim-before-attach-300x286.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/scoring-the-tray-rim-before-attach-768x733.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/scoring-the-tray-rim-before-attach.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>scoring the tray rim before attach</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, when you attach two pieces without doing anything, only by pressing together, yes, they do attach due to that moisture. But when you let the project dry for hours or days before painting or sealing, the moisture inside evaporates and the bonds become weaker. Finally, all the air dry clay pieces you attached fall apart. 🥀</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This happened during my rabbit project, so I know it by experience. 👇</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="my first air dry clay project went horribly wrong! should i just stop? 😢" width="720" height="405" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/c8qwjVC7qQQ?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Clay Was Too Dry When Joined</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is one of the common reasons air dry clay does not attach, especially when attaching new air dry clay pieces with the old one, even though you kept the old one in a sealed container.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Moisture is a must for the bonding of air dry clay. Yes, air dry clay contains moisture inside. But that’s not enough.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you don’t add a little bit of moisture to the bonding surface of the clay and press together, the moisture will evaporate to form the molecular bond between air dry clay particles. Therefore, the bonding will be weaker and pieces will fall apart over time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Water basically acts as a glue when you’re bonding. So, when no water means no bonding. Simple as that. 💧</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3903_6adae3-58"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="866" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/scoring-the-surface-1024x866.webp" alt="scoring the surface" class="kb-img wp-image-3904" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/scoring-the-surface-1024x866.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/scoring-the-surface-300x254.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/scoring-the-surface-768x650.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/scoring-the-surface.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>scoring the surface</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Uneven Shrinkage During Drying</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I told you earlier, air dry clay contains moisture, and it evaporates when the project is drying over time, causing air dry clay to shrink.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think like you make a clay rabbit figure as I did (I tried to do, lol) and you attach a small, cute arm to the big tummy of the rabbit. This is one scenario where your action might fail.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because when you attach a thin air dry clay piece to a large, thick air dry clay piece, the moisture evaporation rates are different due to their sizes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When the moisture evaporates, both thin and thick pieces start to shrink, but at different rates. This uneven shrinkage between attached air dry clay pieces will cause the bond between them to get weaker and pop.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Not Applying a Thin Air-Dry Clay Coil to Attach Large Pieces</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is an optional reason, which is not always the problem, but it can be a reason when air dry clay is not sticking together.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When attaching large air dry clay pieces, a thin line of air-dry clay, which is rolled as a thin coil, is pressed down onto the wet joint to make the pieces lock together structurally. So, when you do not add that thin air dry clay coil along the bonds, you won’t get that structural strength, and you only have to depend on the slip and score method.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This method is really useful when you’re making a tray or dish with air dry clay. You can use a thin coil to attach the tray base to its rim. This whole method is known as the score, slip, and blend method.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3903_38b02f-aa"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="971" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/thin-air-dry-clay-coil-along-the-seam-971x1024.webp" alt="thin air dry clay coil along the seam" class="kb-img wp-image-3908" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/thin-air-dry-clay-coil-along-the-seam-971x1024.webp 971w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/thin-air-dry-clay-coil-along-the-seam-284x300.webp 284w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/thin-air-dry-clay-coil-along-the-seam-768x810.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/thin-air-dry-clay-coil-along-the-seam.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 971px) 100vw, 971px" /><figcaption>thin air dry clay coil along the seam</figcaption></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to Make Air Dry Clay Stick Together (The Right Way)</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When my first rabbit project failed because pieces didn&#8217;t stick together, I did my research and found out I didn’t follow the score and slip method, and I tried to join thin parts with thick parts without proper techniques.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, I did my research and found out how to avoid those <a href="https://clayandme.com/why-my-first-air-dry-clay-rabbit-failed/">mistakes I made during my first project</a> and how to attach any size of air-dry clay piece together with simple and easy techniques.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Follow the Slip and Score Technique</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The slip and score technique is the gold standard of clay building. You must follow this method to attach any size of air dry clay piece to avoid them from falling apart when drying. This basically means building good adhesion between the pieces. Let’s talk about how to do the slip and score technique. 🛠️</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Step 1: Mark the Area</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, you need to mark the surfaces you need to attach using a pin tool. (If you don&#8217;t have tools, you can use a pen, pencil, or needle).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This helps you to precisely decide where to score.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2: Score the Clay</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, score the marked areas of both pieces you need to attach using a pin tool, fork tool, or needle. Scoring basically means scratching the marked surface. Here, you scratch a cross-hatch pattern on both surfaces.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The meaning of scoring is to make the attaching surfaces rough and improve the adhesion. It helps to form a grip between the surfaces to form a strong bond.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Step 3: Make and Apply Slip</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After scoring the marked areas, you need to make the slip. If you don&#8217;t want to make the slip, it&#8217;s ok, because you can even tap a little bit of water onto the scored areas. I tried with water and it worked really fine, making a strong, sticky bond between pieces.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But slip is like a yogurt paste. You can make it by mixing old or new air dry clay with water in a 1:1 ratio. Apply slip to both scored areas evenly (but very little) before attaching them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After use, you can store it in a small bottle, lid closed, and use it for later projects as well.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I think slip provides better structural strength to the bonding area than just tapping the area with a bit of water. The choice is yours.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Step 4: Press and Blend</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After applying the slip or tapping the scored areas with a bit of water, take both air dry clay pieces and press together firmly. Don&#8217;t press too hard, because it can deform the clay pieces.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since you scored and applied slip, a little bit of pressing force is enough to attach clay pieces together. This will form a nice, strong bond when it is drying.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After pressing the air dry clay pieces together, take the smoothing tool and blend the seam to remove air pockets.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For smoothing, if you don&#8217;t have a smoothing tool, you can use a silicone rubber tool or even your finger.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Apply a little bit of water to the blending tool or on your finger tip and then smooth the outline to remove the attachment marks, scratches, and other ugly marks, which will give a good look to the bonded area.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Plus, removing air pockets will avoid forming cracks during the drying process. ✨</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3903_ac53a9-03"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="709" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-2nd-3rd-and-4th-air-dry-clay-projects-after-failed-rabbit-project-1024x709.webp" alt="my 2nd, 3rd and 4th air dry clay projects after failed rabbit project" class="kb-img wp-image-3907" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-2nd-3rd-and-4th-air-dry-clay-projects-after-failed-rabbit-project-1024x709.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-2nd-3rd-and-4th-air-dry-clay-projects-after-failed-rabbit-project-300x208.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-2nd-3rd-and-4th-air-dry-clay-projects-after-failed-rabbit-project-768x532.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-2nd-3rd-and-4th-air-dry-clay-projects-after-failed-rabbit-project.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>my 2nd, 3rd and 4th air dry clay projects after failed rabbit project</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Use Wire Armatures for Heavy Attachments</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you’re attaching thin air dry clay pieces to a thick piece, it&#8217;s better to insert a piece of floral wire or a toothpick between the two pieces before slipping and scoring. Remember: before scoring!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I didn&#8217;t know about this technique, and the legs, arms, and ears of my rabbit fell apart during drying. If I had attached them by inserting toothpicks, they would never have fallen off, even though I did the score and slip technique wrongly.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whenever you feel the slip and score technique is not enough to hold your air dry clay pieces together, you can use this wire or toothpick inserting method. It literally works as a skeleton, which improves the structural strength of the whole project. 🦴</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can You Stick Dried Air Dry Clay Together?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, you can stick air dry clay together even after they are fully dried. But the techniques are a little bit tricky.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You need to have patience because one error can ruin your whole dried project, and there is no moisture inside of the clay to reshape the project once you make errors.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is how,</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Use Adhesive Like Super Glue or Hot Glue</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the easiest method to stick two air dry clay pieces when they are fully dried. This is the method I do the most because I can guarantee it works.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, clean the areas you need to attach and remove air dry clay residue and dust. Then, you simply have to apply super glue, hot glue, craft glue, or even epoxy to the dried air dry clay piece areas and press them together firmly for a few minutes until they stick together.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And then let the project dry for several hours until the glue dries, forming a strong bond. If you use <a href="https://www.loctite-consumer.com.au/ideas/repair-diy-projects/super-glue-all-you-need-to-know-to-get-the-best-results.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">super glue</a>, it forms a fast, strong, and nearly invisible bond on clean, flat breaks. Hot glue is good for attaching large, hollow pieces. 💡</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Adding Wet Clay to Dry Clay</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you don&#8217;t have adhesive, or if you don&#8217;t like using anything apart from air dry clay, this is the best method for you. You need to mix new clay with a little bit of water and press that against the old air dry clay pieces where you need to attach.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, this paste looks like slip, but it&#8217;s not, because we are not mixing clay and water in a 1:1 ratio. Too much water is not good due to shrinkage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This method has a risk because when the paste gets drier, the water inside evaporates and can weaken the bond due to uneven shrinkage of the wet and dried clay.</p>

</div></div>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image3903_95053e-0f"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="903" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-second-air-dry-clay-project-903x1024.webp" alt="my second air dry clay project" class="kb-img wp-image-3909" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-second-air-dry-clay-project-903x1024.webp 903w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-second-air-dry-clay-project-265x300.webp 265w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-second-air-dry-clay-project-768x871.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/my-second-air-dry-clay-project.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 903px) 100vw, 903px" /><figcaption>my second air dry clay project</figcaption></figure></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tips to Prevent Cracks and Broken Joints</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Follow the tips below to make sure you’re making a strong bond between air dry clay pieces and attaching each piece without worrying they won’t stick together well.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Maintain the Moisture of the Clay</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Always add a little bit of water to your hand or onto the clay while you’re shaping it. Keep a spray bottle nearby and keep using it when you’re working with clay. Don&#8217;t let the clay dry even before you’re shaping and attaching it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even when kneading and shaping, use a little bit of water. This will make the clay soft, easier to shape, and help to make a strong bond due to high tackiness.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But keep in mind water evaporates over time, so regular clay wetting is needed during shaping. But make sure not to add too much water, because too much water makes the drying time longer and causes uneven shrinkage, which can lead to cracks on the surface. Always use a little bit of water even when shaping and attaching pieces. Even use a little bit of water and tap that onto the scored areas before attaching for better bonding strength.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Slow Down the Drying Process</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don&#8217;t let the air dry clay piece dry in the sun or inside the oven. This will cause uneven shrinkage because inside wet clay and outside clay dry faster. This will weaken bonds and cause attached pieces to tear apart. Also, this results in cracks on the surface.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Keep the finished air dry clay project in a cool, well-ventilated area for drying, or you can cover the finished project loosely with a plastic bag. Then, let it slow-dry for 24-48 hours depending on the size and thickness of the project.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Slow drying dries out inside and outside and thick and thin parts at the same rate and avoids cracks and weakening bonds.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Maintain Even Wall Thickness</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Imagine you’re making a tray or dish and the rim has no even thickness. This can cause uneven drying rates and result in breaking bonds between the rim and the tray base.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Therefore, always maintain even thickness when you’re making walls, little pieces, etc. Even thickness means the same drying rate, the same evaporation rate, and no uneven shrinkage. So, no loose bonds and no cracks forming.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">My Message For You!</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re dealing with issues about why your air dry clay is not sticking together, follow the above steps and correct the mistakes you made. It&#8217;s completely fine, because we all are still beginners.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first project I made fell apart because I didn&#8217;t know the above techniques. But now I know. Likewise, you should now try to attach dried air dry clay pieces using the super glue method and make sure to follow the slip and score technique in your future projects.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Keep in mind, learning to manage moisture and shrinkage is one of the main parts of the air dry clay learning curve. Once you learn it, apply it to the same project. Simple as that! All the best to all the clay artists! 🎨</p>
