<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Peaches are one of the most popular summer fruits in the USA with around 62% of U.S. adults looking forward to eating them. It has a nice human buttocks shape, mostly used for emojis. 🍑</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_8e10f0-a9"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="829" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-1024x829.webp" alt="peach trinket tray made with air dry clay" class="kb-img wp-image-5499" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-1024x829.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-300x243.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay-768x622.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-made-with-air-dry-clay.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>peach trinket tray made with air dry clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today I’m adding another jewelry dish to my collection with the shape of this amazing fruit.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’m gonna tell you each and every step I followed when making this as simple as possible because, as beginners, we don’t like expert complex tips because most of them are not practical and budget friendly.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’ll share all the mistakes I made along the project and how you can avoid them as well, which don’t usually come from the experts because they rarely make them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ok, enough chit chat! Let’s start making!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why air dry clay?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What if I tell you air dry clay is the most beginner friendly clay? Trust me, I&#8217;ve got some points. Read them and you decide.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Reason 1: Air dry clay is cheap and has room for mistakes</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay is 2x or sometimes 3x cheaper than polymer clay which is another popular clay type. As beginners, we make lots of mistakes during the projects and we like to experiment with the clay because that’s how we can learn new skills and practice new tips.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the clay is quite expensive, we are naturally afraid to play with the clay a little and every time we try to make things perfectly without making a single error, not knowing that those errors are what make us grow by learning how to fix them.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_3ad3ea-96"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" width="470" height="228" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/mont-marte-air-dry-clay.webp" alt="mont marte air dry clay" class="kb-img wp-image-4710" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/mont-marte-air-dry-clay.webp 470w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/mont-marte-air-dry-clay-300x146.webp 300w" sizes="(max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px" /><figcaption>mont marte air dry clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Reason 2: Air dry clay does not need to be kiln fired or baked</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay dries in the air and you don&#8217;t need to have an oven or kiln like for polymer clay and traditional pottery clay.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Reason 3: Easy to shape and correct mistakes</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can give any shape you want to your air dry clay piece just by kneading with a little bit of water. Yes, it gets messy, but easy to handle and comfortable for the hands.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you mistakenly scratch, crack or split air dry clay, you can easily fix that by tapping a little bit of water onto the area and gliding your index finger repeatedly until those imperfections vanish. Easy as that!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can find more <a href="https://clayandme.com/air-dry-clay-pros-and-cons/">advantages with few disadvantages of air dry clay in my latest in depth article.</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now you know exactly why I selected that when making this cute project and you should try it as well.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Supplies you’ll need</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Air dry clay (DAS, Mont Marte, Jovi or any reputed brand you can find is okay)</li>

<li>Acrylic rolling pin</li>

<li>PVC mat or silicone mat (or non-stick surface)</li>

<li>Clay crafting tools</li>

<li>Clay cutting tool (X-acto knife or small knife)</li>

<li>Cup of water or spray bottle</li>

<li>Acrylic paints</li>

<li>Gloss varnish</li>

<li>Paintbrushes</li>

<li>Paper towels</li>

<li>Optional: Sponge or silicone sculpting tool (or you can use your finger)</li>
</ul>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_2def6c-bd"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="728" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/supplies-1024x728.webp" alt="supplies" class="kb-img wp-image-5500" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/supplies-1024x728.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/supplies-300x213.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/supplies-768x546.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/supplies.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>supplies</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most of the above tools (except the air dry clay material) can be found in your kitchen drawers that haven’t opened since last Christmas. So do some digging without rushing to the nearest store. <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-create-realistic-textures-in-air-dry-clay-without-expensive-tools/">Toothpicks</a> are able to replace many air dry clay tools because they work exactly the same if used correctly.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Easy diy peach jewelry dish tutorial video</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have recorded everything and published on YouTube and embedded it here. So you don’t want to go anywhere else for video tutorials if you prefer them over written guides.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I recommend you watch it before you start making it to get an idea about all the steps I took, tips and techniques I used, mistakes I made, and how I fixed them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Feel free to watch and try it out! 📺</p>

</div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finished watching the video? Let’s have a look at the detailed written step by step guide.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Step by step peach jewelry dish tutorial</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before you start making it, go to a well ventilated area or open all the windows of your room because air dry clay contains tiny dust like particles that can cause breathing issues. I don’t want you to cough like a seal when making.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 1: Condition and knead the clay</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Conditioning and kneading air dry clay is must before you start any air dry clay project to <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-keep-air-dry-clay-soft-while-working/">make the clay soft</a> and easy to shape.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_a54afd-89"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="779" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/conditioning-the-air-dry-clay-1024x779.webp" alt="conditioning the air dry clay" class="kb-img wp-image-5501" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/conditioning-the-air-dry-clay-1024x779.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/conditioning-the-air-dry-clay-300x228.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/conditioning-the-air-dry-clay-768x584.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/conditioning-the-air-dry-clay.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>conditioning the air dry clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay comes a bit stiff fresh from the package and first you need to tap a little bit of water onto the surface to condition it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then <a href="https://clayandme.com/do-you-need-to-knead-air-dry-clay/">start kneading</a> the clay piece by pressing, pulling and pushing repeatedly like you’re making a dough.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_2c3b10-02"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="750" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/kneading-the-clay-1024x750.webp" alt="kneading the clay" class="kb-img wp-image-5502" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/kneading-the-clay-1024x750.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/kneading-the-clay-300x220.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/kneading-the-clay-768x563.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/kneading-the-clay.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>kneading the clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kneading does great things to your air dry clay piece than just making it soft. Air dry clay is a highly porous material with lots of moisture and air pockets inside. But the moisture spreads randomly across its layers and evaporates as the clay dries.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Due to the uneven evaporation of water, <a href="https://clayandme.com/why-your-air-dry-clay-shrinks/">clay starts to shrink</a> unevenly, causing uneven shrinkage. Due to the uneven shrinkage, tension starts to build up between the layers and eventually tiny cracks occur on the surface. Those cracks will get deeper and wider as the clay dries.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We cannot stop the shrinkage of air dry clay, but we can make it even by spreading moisture evenly across all the layers inside air dry clay piece. That’s actually what kneading does.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kneading has so many advantages such as,</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Makes the clay soft.</li>

<li>Makes the clay easy to shape.</li>

<li>Spreads the moisture evenly.</li>

<li>Stops surface cracking due to uneven shrinkage as the clay dries.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>But make sure to use only a little bit of water while you’re conditioning and kneading the clay because too much water can cause surface <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-prevent-air-dry-clay-trays-from-cracking-while-drying/">cracks as the clay dries</a>.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Too much water cause rapid evaporation as the clay dries which can cause surface cracks. Remember air dry clay needs to dry slow to avoid forming cracks.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the clay is soft enough, it’s time to move on to the rolling step.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_b5e9ee-9f"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="851" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/readying-clay-for-rolling-1024x851.webp" alt="readying clay for rolling" class="kb-img wp-image-5503" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/readying-clay-for-rolling-1024x851.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/readying-clay-for-rolling-300x249.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/readying-clay-for-rolling-768x638.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/readying-clay-for-rolling.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>readying clay for rolling</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2: Roll the clay</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now place the kneaded air dry clay piece on your mat and start <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-roll-out-air-dry-clay-perfectly/">rolling</a> to an even <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-thick-should-air-dry-clay-be/">thickness</a> about ¼ inch.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your rolling pin and mat should made of non stick materials. Silicone or <a href="https://clayandme.com/why-i-use-a-pvc-mat-for-air-dry-clay-projects/">PVC materials </a>are great for mats and <a href="https://clayandme.com/do-you-need-an-acrylic-rolling-pin-for-air-dry-clay/">an acrylic rolling pin</a> is recommended.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_02d1b4-a6"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="776" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/rolling-the-air-dry-clay-1024x776.webp" alt="rolling the air dry clay" class="kb-img wp-image-5504" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/rolling-the-air-dry-clay-1024x776.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/rolling-the-air-dry-clay-300x227.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/rolling-the-air-dry-clay-768x582.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/rolling-the-air-dry-clay.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>rolling the air dry clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even though you use non stick materials for rolling, make sure to flip, turn and rotate the clay piece while rolling to avoid it from <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-keep-air-dry-clay-from-sticking-to-your-table/">sticking on to your surface</a>, <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-stop-air-dry-clay-from-sticking-to-your-rolling-pin/">your rolling pin </a>and to stop clay from tearing apart when you lift the clay up after rolling.</p>

<div class="kb-row-layout-wrap kb-row-layout-id5483_d6c901-53 alignnone has-theme-palette8-background-color kt-row-has-bg wp-block-kadence-rowlayout"><div class="kt-row-column-wrap kt-has-1-columns kt-row-layout-equal kt-tab-layout-inherit kt-mobile-layout-row kt-row-valign-top">

<div class="wp-block-kadence-column kadence-column5483_87857d-a4"><div class="kt-inside-inner-col">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>When you’re rolling the clay, the moisture inside will come out and makes many vacuum like seals with your mat. If you don’t change the clay position as roll, clay will stuck to your mat and hard to release without them tearing apart.</strong></p>
</div></div>

</div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you’re done with rolling, smooth out the clay surface by dipping your index finger in a cup of water and gliding on the clay slab repeatedly until tiny bumps, imperfections and cracks vanish.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Smoothing is essential from now onwards after each step for a nice and clean look, but only with a little bit of water. You already know what happens when you use excess amount of water.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_127f6f-7c"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="796" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-the-rolled-clay-slab-1024x796.webp" alt="smoothing the rolled clay slab" class="kb-img wp-image-5508" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-the-rolled-clay-slab-1024x796.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-the-rolled-clay-slab-300x233.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-the-rolled-clay-slab-768x597.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-the-rolled-clay-slab.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>smoothing the rolled clay slab</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 3: Trace and cut the peach shape</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now pick up your clay tracing tool or even a toothpick also fine and trace the peach shape.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_40b713-06"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="788" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/tracing-the-peach-shape-1024x788.webp" alt="tracing the peach shape" class="kb-img wp-image-5505" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/tracing-the-peach-shape-1024x788.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/tracing-the-peach-shape-300x231.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/tracing-the-peach-shape-768x591.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/tracing-the-peach-shape.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>tracing the peach shape</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I recommend you to trace the <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-shape-organic-air-dry-clay-forms-without-molds-or-cookie-cutters/">shape freehand</a> to improve your drawing skills because it’s not hard to trace, but if you don’t like that, you are free to <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-cut-perfect-shapes-in-air-dry-clay-without-cutters/">use a paper template</a>, stencil, cookie cutter or mold that have the round egg shape.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tracing is important before cutting especially if you use freehand because you can easily vanish the mistakes you make while tracing by gliding your finger.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you get the shape you wanted, you can start the cutting along he traced lines using the X-acto knife or small knife.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_d747b5-6e"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="779" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/cutting-the-tray-base-1024x779.webp" alt="cutting the tray base" class="kb-img wp-image-5509" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/cutting-the-tray-base-1024x779.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/cutting-the-tray-base-300x228.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/cutting-the-tray-base-768x584.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/cutting-the-tray-base.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>cutting the tray base</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you’re cutting, do not drag the knife horizontally across the board because there is a high chance of clay stick to your knife blade and cause teared up and cracked edges. That happened during my <a href="https://clayandme.com/why-my-pineapple-trinket-tray-failed/">failed pineapple trinket tray project </a>and I had to restart everything again from the start.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_d07701-94"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="704" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/removing-the-excess-1024x704.webp" alt="removing the excess" class="kb-img wp-image-5510" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/removing-the-excess-1024x704.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/removing-the-excess-300x206.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/removing-the-excess-768x528.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/removing-the-excess.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>removing the excess</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lift the clay up while you’re cutting, clean the tiny clay pieces on the blade and continue the cutting. This way you can achieve <a href="https://clayandme.com/cut-air-dry-clay-clean-edges/">sharp and smooth edge</a> around the peach dish base.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Awesome friends, you have successfully made the peach dish base. Now it’s time to make the rim and attach it to the base.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_5a5fb8-94"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="782" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-out-the-peach-tray-base-1024x782.webp" alt="smoothing out the peach tray base" class="kb-img wp-image-5511" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-out-the-peach-tray-base-1024x782.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-out-the-peach-tray-base-300x229.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-out-the-peach-tray-base-768x586.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-out-the-peach-tray-base.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>smoothing out the peach tray base</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 4: Roll and attach the rim</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I planned to make a cylinder like shape for rim for my jewelry dish or you can make a wall like shape as well.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let me tell you how I made and attached mine to the base.&nbsp;</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Take a fresh piece of clay and knead it well.</li>

<li>&nbsp;Roll it like a snake with an even diameter along the length.</li>

<li>Score one side of the dish rim and along the edge of the dish base.</li>

<li>Apply slip on the scored areas or tap the scored areas with a little bit of water.</li>

<li>Attach the dish rim to the base.</li>

<li>Cut the dish rim edges at an angle and join.</li>

<li>Smooth it out.</li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://clayandme.com/why-is-my-air-dry-clay-not-sticking-together/">Air dry clay does not attach together</a> just by pressing. You need to follow score and slip method.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_c73685-af"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="666" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/scoring-around-thetray-base-1024x666.webp" alt="scoring around the tray base" class="kb-img wp-image-5517" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/scoring-around-thetray-base-1024x666.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/scoring-around-thetray-base-300x195.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/scoring-around-thetray-base-768x499.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/scoring-around-thetray-base.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>scoring around the tray base</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Scoring the surfaces before attaching helps them to have a better grip. Otherwise, air-dry clay pieces will loosen and separate as the clay dries due to shrinkage.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_db2d16-a3"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="618" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/scoring-the-tray-rim-1024x618.webp" alt="scoring the tray rim" class="kb-img wp-image-5518" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/scoring-the-tray-rim-1024x618.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/scoring-the-tray-rim-300x181.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/scoring-the-tray-rim-768x463.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/scoring-the-tray-rim.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>scoring the tray rim</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After scoring the surfaces with a toothpick or a scoring tool apply a creamy paste called “slip”.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Slip is made by mixing tiny air dry clay pieces with an equal amount of water and letting it sit for hours before use. It acts like a glue for air dry clay. Applying it over scored areas makes the joints stronger.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Or you tap the scored surfaces with a little bit of water as I did, because I didn’t have the slip. Don’t worry water is also just as good as the slip. I tried and it worked so well.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cut the edges of rim at an angle to easily attach the ends after coving around the dish base. Hold the rim for few seconds before reasing to attach the two surfaces well.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_4d485d-58"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="690" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-the-tray-rim-1024x690.webp" alt="smoothing the tray rim" class="kb-img wp-image-5522" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-the-tray-rim-1024x690.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-the-tray-rim-300x202.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-the-tray-rim-768x518.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/smoothing-the-tray-rim.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>smoothing the tray rim</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re doing great my friend! We made the basic structure of our peach dish. Now we need to add only a few attachments before painting the project.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 5: Apply a thin clay coil</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This step is optional. Skip this step if you’re running out of air dry clay. But make sure to attach the rim and the base well, following the technique I told you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We gonna add a thin clay coil along the joint between the dish base and rim to reinforce it.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After adding the thin clay coil, I 100% guarantee you the dish rim and base will never separate as the clay dries due to the shrinkage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make a clay coil as thin as possible by rolling with your hands because we don&#8217;t want to make it look bumped above the dish level.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_0155da-73"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="807" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/making-the-thin-clay-coil-1024x807.webp" alt="making the thin clay coil" class="kb-img wp-image-5523" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/making-the-thin-clay-coil-1024x807.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/making-the-thin-clay-coil-300x237.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/making-the-thin-clay-coil-768x605.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/making-the-thin-clay-coil.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>making the thin clay coil</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next tap the joint between the rim and the base with a little bit of water and attach the thin clay coil seam along the joint carefully.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do not panic because this step needs your patience. It’s a bit hard to attach the coil with your fingers. Use a sculpting tool or a cotton earbud. Gently press along the seam to attach well.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_7bf608-bc"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="655" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/adding-the-clay-coil-1024x655.webp" alt="adding the clay coil" class="kb-img wp-image-5524" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/adding-the-clay-coil-1024x655.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/adding-the-clay-coil-300x192.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/adding-the-clay-coil-768x492.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/adding-the-clay-coil.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>adding the clay coil</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finally smooth out the clay along the joint to vanish the seam.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 7: Let it dry</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now let your peach jewelry dish made with air dry clay dry slowly for 48-72 hours in a cool, well ventilaed area.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_456672-04"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="748" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-before-drying-1024x748.webp" alt="peach trinket tray before drying" class="kb-img wp-image-5537" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-before-drying-1024x748.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-before-drying-300x219.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-before-drying-768x561.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-before-drying.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>peach trinket tray before drying</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The reason I mentioned the word “slow” is that if you try to dry it faster by keeping it under sunlight, applying a heat source or placing it under a fan, I’m sorry you’ll probably end up with a cracked dish because rapid water evaporation triggers uneven shrinkage which causes surface cracks.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://clayandme.com/how-long-does-air-dry-clay-take-to-dry/">Drying time</a> can changes due to the thickness of your air dry clay and the humidity in your area. High humidity means slow water evaporation speed and the drying time will be longer.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After 48 hours, check if there are any grey patches because grey areas mean the clay is still wet and you need to let it dry more for another 24 hours. Air dry clay turns pure white when it is fully dry.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_a679aa-e1"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="746" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-after-drying-1024x746.webp" alt="peach trinket tray after drying" class="kb-img wp-image-5538" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-after-drying-1024x746.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-after-drying-300x219.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-after-drying-768x559.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/peach-trinket-tray-after-drying.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>peach trinket tray after drying</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 8: Paint the dish</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the dish is fully dried, you can start to paint it. I used acrylic paints.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Read: <a href="https://clayandme.com/can-you-paint-air-dry-clay-before-it-dries/">Can You Paint Air Dry Clay Before It Dries? (And What Happens If You Do)</a></em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Acrylics are considered the best paint for air dry clay because they come in vivid colors, require no water for mixing because water weakens the clay, easy to apply, dries within 2 hours, gives a glossy finish and make a water resistant coating over the air dry clay project.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I started painting the dish base first, following the peach colors.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_4832ef-c3"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="686" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/mixing-acrylics-for-the-tray-base-1024x686.webp" alt="mixing acrylics for the tray base" class="kb-img wp-image-5539" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/mixing-acrylics-for-the-tray-base-1024x686.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/mixing-acrylics-for-the-tray-base-300x201.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/mixing-acrylics-for-the-tray-base-768x515.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/mixing-acrylics-for-the-tray-base.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image5483_b44244-04"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="701" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/painting-the-tray-base-1024x701.webp" alt="painting the tray base" class="kb-img wp-image-5540" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/painting-the-tray-base-1024x701.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/painting-the-tray-base-300x206.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/painting-the-tray-base-768x526.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/painting-the-tray-base.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>painting the tray base</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then painted the peach dish rim, adding some purple.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Apply thin and even coats in one direction to avoid forming tacky spots and a mushy core.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After each coat, let it dry for 1-2 hours. After the final coat of acrylic, let it dry well for 2 hours.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 9: Seal the project</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-seal-and-waterproof-air-dry-clay-trinket-trays/">Sealing your air dry clay project</a> is a must to protect it from outside moisture. Otherwise, moisture will sneak inside of your clay and weaken it. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When the clay is weakeneing the cracked will start to form and small pieces will start to fall off due to the loosening of joints.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use gloss varnish, UV resin, polyurethane varnish or epoxy resin to seal your peach dish. <a href="https://clayandme.com/can-you-use-epoxy-resin-on-air-dry-clay/">Epoxy resin</a> is great for a waterproofing coating and to get a glassy, water like texture like finish.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a beginner, I liked to follow simple and easy methods to make this dish because the methods experts or online gurus tell us are too complex and not suitable for newbies.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I did my research and found the best methods and techniques to make a beautiful jewelry dish.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here I’m gonna tell you about every step I followed and every mistake I made, and how I fixed them to achieve what I wanted.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can follow the method I discuss above to make an even better looking jewelry dish best for holding accessories or simply serving as a decorative sculptural accent piece.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ok, enough chit chat. Buckle up! Let’s start making!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why I used air dry clay</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The main reason I went with air dry clay because it is cheap. For example, polymer clay is 2x to 3x more expensive than air dry clay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don’t need to kiln or bake air dry clay. It dries in the air.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, air dry clay cracks quickly and is messier than other clays, but with proper techniques you can avoid it cracking. A messy workspace is normal for an artist and as a beginner, that messiness is what shows us we are doing hard work.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Plus, as beginners, we do waste a lot of clay. If you go with an expensive clay type, you can experiment with it because no clay should go to waste. But with air dry clay, you can try new things, new experiments, make mistakes and learn from them all because it is quite cheap.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now you know all the reasons why I went with air dry clay even when there are less messy, easy to work clays available. But working with air dry clay is quite fun. I’ll explain more while we are making our masterpiece.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Materials you will need</h2>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Air dry clay (any reputed brand you can find is okay, I used Mont Marte)</li>

<li>Acrylic rolling pin or cooking rolling pin</li>

<li>PVC mat or silicone mat (or non-stick surface)</li>

<li>Clay crafting tools</li>

<li>Clay cutting tool (or small knife)</li>

<li>Cup of water or spray bottle</li>

<li>A few small rocks (I used seashells)</li>

<li>Acrylic paint (pink, white)</li>

<li>Gloss varnish</li>

<li>Paintbrushes</li>

<li>Paper towels</li>

<li>Optional: Sponge or silicone sculpting tool (or you can use your finger)</li>
</ul>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_e7684e-03"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/supplies-1024x768.webp" alt="supplies" class="kb-img wp-image-4846" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/supplies-1024x768.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/supplies-300x225.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/supplies-768x576.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/supplies-500x375.webp 500w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/supplies.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>supplies</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you couldn’t find any of the materials above, don’t worry or panic. Go and open your kitchen drawer and find a similar item that does the job. As clay artists, we don’t panic, we adjust!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now you have everything you need. So let’s goooooo….</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now let’s look at the detailed written step by step guide.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Step-by-step jewelry dish tutorial</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before you start making, go to a well ventilated area or open all the windows in your room. I don’t want you to cough while making due to fine air dry clay particles.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 1: Knead the clay</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cut and take a fresh air dry clay piece and condition it first by tapping a little bit of water. Conditioning makes the kneading process easier.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_f66115-e3"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="926" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/conditioning-the-clay-1024x926.webp" alt="conditioning the clay" class="kb-img wp-image-4847" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/conditioning-the-clay-1024x926.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/conditioning-the-clay-300x271.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/conditioning-the-clay-768x694.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/conditioning-the-clay.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>conditioning the clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now make your palms wet and start kneading the clay thoroughly like dough.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Add a little bit of water onto the clay while kneading, but not too much because too much water can cause <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-prevent-air-dry-clay-trays-from-cracking-while-drying/">cracks while drying</a> the clay due to faster and uneven moisture evaporation.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_8e8f42-e3"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="877" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/kneading-the-clay-1024x877.webp" alt="kneading the clay" class="kb-img wp-image-4848" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/kneading-the-clay-1024x877.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/kneading-the-clay-300x257.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/kneading-the-clay-768x658.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/kneading-the-clay.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>kneading the clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Air dry clay is a highly porous material with lots of moisture and air inside. Kneading spreads the moisture evenly and releases the trapped air inside. Because of an even moisture level across all the levels of air dry clay, it does not shrink unevenly when drying after you make the project. Because of no uneven shrinkage, cracks won’t form on the surface.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">See kneading interlink with many steps in future. Therefore, kneading is a must before you start making anything with air dry clay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’ll feel the clay getting softer and softer while kneading. After kneading for about 3-5 minutes, the clay is soft enough for rolling.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 2: Roll the clay</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Place the kneaded air dry clay piece on your work mat and start rolling with the acrylic rolling pin to an even thickness.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_7468f2-df"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="985" height="1024" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/preparing-the-clay-for-rolling-985x1024.webp" alt="preparing the clay for rolling" class="kb-img wp-image-4849" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/preparing-the-clay-for-rolling-985x1024.webp 985w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/preparing-the-clay-for-rolling-289x300.webp 289w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/preparing-the-clay-for-rolling-768x798.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/preparing-the-clay-for-rolling.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 985px) 100vw, 985px" /><figcaption>preparing the clay for rolling</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I aimed for ½ inch thickness. You can use rubber or silicone rings or guide rails to make the clay slab as thick as you want.</p>

<div class="kb-row-layout-wrap kb-row-layout-id4840_5eb522-93 alignnone has-theme-palette8-background-color kt-row-has-bg wp-block-kadence-rowlayout"><div class="kt-row-column-wrap kt-has-1-columns kt-row-layout-equal kt-tab-layout-inherit kt-mobile-layout-row kt-row-valign-top">

<div class="wp-block-kadence-column kadence-column4840_e616fd-ab"><div class="kt-inside-inner-col">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Flip, turn and rotate your clay slab 90 degrees while rolling to avoid it from <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-keep-air-dry-clay-from-sticking-to-your-table/">sticking to the surface</a>. Changing the position and angle of the clay slab while rolling helps to lift the clay without tearing it apart.&nbsp;</strong></p>
</div></div>

</div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I didn’t follow the flip and turn technique while making <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-i-made-my-first-air-dry-clay-trinket-tray/">my first trinket tray</a> and tore it apart several times, wasting hours of work.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_4d3206-6f"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="740" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/rolling-the-air-dry-clay-1024x740.webp" alt="rolling the air dry clay" class="kb-img wp-image-4850" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/rolling-the-air-dry-clay-1024x740.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/rolling-the-air-dry-clay-300x217.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/rolling-the-air-dry-clay-768x555.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/rolling-the-air-dry-clay.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>rolling the air dry clay</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use a PVC mat or a silicone mat to avoid clay from sticking to it, or you can take the wooden mat and wrap it with parchment paper. I use a PVC mat and it works so well.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After rolling is done, <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-get-smooth-even-edges-on-air-dry-clay-trays/">smooth out the clay</a> slab surface and around its edge by dipping your finger in the water and gliding it on the clay slab to remove small bumps, micro scratches and cracks.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 3: Cut the dish shape</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’m a big believer in freehand cutting. So I wanted to make this jewelry dish a free shape. Freehand cutting helps to improve the handling of crafting tools and you don’t need templates or molds.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_ad8659-af"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="660" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/cutting-the-shape-1024x660.webp" alt="cutting the shape" class="kb-img wp-image-4851" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/cutting-the-shape-1024x660.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/cutting-the-shape-300x194.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/cutting-the-shape-768x495.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/cutting-the-shape.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>cutting the shape</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, you might make it too thin or too fat, but that’s ok. Not all the dishes look the same. Be unique.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re bad at drawing like me, trace first before cutting.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_43de3e-d5"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="684" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/jewelry-dish-base-1024x684.webp" alt="jewelry dish base" class="kb-img wp-image-4852" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/jewelry-dish-base-1024x684.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/jewelry-dish-base-300x200.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/jewelry-dish-base-768x513.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/jewelry-dish-base.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>jewelry dish base</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Try to <a href="https://clayandme.com/cut-air-dry-clay-clean-edges/">cut as sharp as possible</a>. Lift the craft knife while cutting instead of dragging it horizontally to avoid torn-up edges.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now you’ve successfully made the dish base. Don’t forget to smooth the surface by gliding your wet fingers on the clay slab.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 4: Shaping the wavy edges</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is where I did something new and unique. Instead of making flat base I thought to rise the edges and make it wavy.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_e743a6-20"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="666" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/using-seashells-to-make-the-edges-wavy-1024x666.webp" alt="using seashells to make the edges wavy" class="kb-img wp-image-4853" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/using-seashells-to-make-the-edges-wavy-1024x666.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/using-seashells-to-make-the-edges-wavy-300x195.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/using-seashells-to-make-the-edges-wavy-768x500.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/using-seashells-to-make-the-edges-wavy.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>using seashells to make the edges wavy</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To do that, you can either place small rocks around the base under the edges of the wet clay to create and hold the wavy rim as it dries.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_96f1df-16"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="724" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/raised-wavy-edges-1024x724.webp" alt="raised wavy edges" class="kb-img wp-image-4854" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/raised-wavy-edges-1024x724.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/raised-wavy-edges-300x212.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/raised-wavy-edges-768x543.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/raised-wavy-edges.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>raised wavy edges</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I used seashells because my wife is a big shell collector. I placed them randomly along the edges to give the dish a minimal look and make it appear shallow.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_4abe37-76"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="729" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/smoothing-the-dish-base-1024x729.webp" alt="smoothing the dish base" class="kb-img wp-image-4855" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/smoothing-the-dish-base-1024x729.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/smoothing-the-dish-base-300x214.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/smoothing-the-dish-base-768x547.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/smoothing-the-dish-base.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>smoothing the dish base</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Please guys and gals, don’t go to the beach. Use small rocks or bottle caps. We just need to raise the edges.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_f6b2ca-b0"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="750" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/jewelry-dish-before-drying-1024x750.webp" alt="jewelry dish before drying" class="kb-img wp-image-4856" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/jewelry-dish-before-drying-1024x750.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/jewelry-dish-before-drying-300x220.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/jewelry-dish-before-drying-768x563.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/jewelry-dish-before-drying.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>jewelry dish before drying</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 4: Crafting and attaching small flowers</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recently I bought a set of flower molds for my air dry clay projects. I took 3 sizes and made around 15 small five-petal flowers, but I attached only 11 because 15 seemed too much.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_2fab02-42"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="747" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/using-mold-for-making-clay-flowers-1024x747.webp" alt="using mold for making clay flowers" class="kb-img wp-image-4857" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/using-mold-for-making-clay-flowers-1024x747.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/using-mold-for-making-clay-flowers-300x219.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/using-mold-for-making-clay-flowers-768x560.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/using-mold-for-making-clay-flowers.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>using mold for making clay flowers</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It was easy. You just have to fill the mold with fresh air dry clay in tiny pieces and press from the top like a syringe.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_94ec7d-e1"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="807" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/making-the-clay-flowers-1024x807.webp" alt="making the clay flowers" class="kb-img wp-image-4858" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/making-the-clay-flowers-1024x807.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/making-the-clay-flowers-300x237.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/making-the-clay-flowers-768x605.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/making-the-clay-flowers.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>making the clay flowers</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you don’t have molds, don’t worry, even I didn’t at the beginning. Just try to cut flower shape crafts with your X-Acto knife. They don&#8217;t need to be perfect.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After making the flowers, score the bottom of them and score the areas you want to attach them to your main dish base and tap those scored areas a little bit with water and gently press the flowers against the tray base and attach.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://clayandme.com/why-is-my-air-dry-clay-not-sticking-together/">Air dry clay pieces do not attach to each other without scoring</a>. Therefore, scoring is a must before attaching.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Congratulations friends! You have successfully made the jewelry dish, but it&#8217;s not finished yet!</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_bde6c0-8f"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="737" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/completed-jewelry-dish-before-drying-1024x737.webp" alt="completed jewelry dish before drying" class="kb-img wp-image-4862" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/completed-jewelry-dish-before-drying-1024x737.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/completed-jewelry-dish-before-drying-300x216.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/completed-jewelry-dish-before-drying-768x553.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/completed-jewelry-dish-before-drying.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>completed jewelry dish before drying</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 5: Let the dish dry</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now let the jewelry dish you made dry for 24-48 hours in a well ventilated and cool area. <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-long-does-air-dry-clay-take-to-dry/">Air dry clay dries</a> in the air.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make sure not to rush the drying process by placing it under sunlight or in an oven. Rushing drying time without using proper methods can cause uneven shrinkage and cracks on the surface. Eventually, your hours of work may get ruined.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I always recommend letting the project dry slowly. If you really need to dry it faster, keep it under a fan and make sure to flip it from time to time while drying to evaporate water efficiently from all sides. But be careful. Your attached flowers may fall while flipping. Better to let the project dry slowly, as I told you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Check the project after 48 hours. If you see gray patches on your clay dish, let it dry for another 24 hours.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Drying time of air dry clay depends on the clay thickness and the humidity in your area. Generally, air dry clay appears fully pure white when it is fully dried.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_3a998c-86"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="764" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-jewelry-dish-after-drying-1024x764.webp" alt="air dry clay jewelry dish after drying" class="kb-img wp-image-4863" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-jewelry-dish-after-drying-1024x764.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-jewelry-dish-after-drying-300x224.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-jewelry-dish-after-drying-768x573.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/air-dry-clay-jewelry-dish-after-drying.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>air dry clay jewelry dish after drying</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 6: Paint the dish</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Never paint on a wet air dry clay project because your paint may start to peel off. I use acrylic paints because they don&#8217;t need or need a very low amount of water to dissolve, come in vivid colors, dry in the air, give a shiny, glossy look and make a water resistant coating over the project.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_7d0c93-f5"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="841" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/making-the-dish-base-color-1024x841.webp" alt="making the dish base color" class="kb-img wp-image-4867" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/making-the-dish-base-color-1024x841.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/making-the-dish-base-color-300x247.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/making-the-dish-base-color-768x631.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/making-the-dish-base-color.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>making the dish base color</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, I mixed pink and white on my color palette to make the color I want for the tray base. After painting the base fully mixed more pink with less white for the flowers.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_99b493-94"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="885" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painting-the-main-dish-base-1024x885.webp" alt="painting the main dish base" class="kb-img wp-image-4868" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painting-the-main-dish-base-1024x885.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painting-the-main-dish-base-300x259.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painting-the-main-dish-base-768x664.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painting-the-main-dish-base.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>painting the main dish base</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make sure to apply thin and even coats of acrylic over air dry clay to avoid forming mushy, cloudy looking tacky spots.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_90fe05-8a"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="678" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painting-the-clay-flowers-1024x678.webp" alt="painting the clay flowers" class="kb-img wp-image-4870" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painting-the-clay-flowers-1024x678.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painting-the-clay-flowers-300x199.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painting-the-clay-flowers-768x508.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painting-the-clay-flowers.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>painting the clay flowers</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Apply 2-3 coats of acrylic for a shinier look and let each coat dry for 1 hour before applying another. After the final coat of acrylic, let it dry for 2 hours before you start sealing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Apply in one direction to avoid leaving brush marks. Use flat brushes for painting larger areas and fine detailed brushes for flowers.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_15830c-ba"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painted-air-dry-clay-jewelry-dish-1024x768.webp" alt="painted air dry clay jewelry dish" class="kb-img wp-image-4871" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painted-air-dry-clay-jewelry-dish-1024x768.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painted-air-dry-clay-jewelry-dish-300x225.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painted-air-dry-clay-jewelry-dish-768x576.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painted-air-dry-clay-jewelry-dish-500x375.webp 500w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/painted-air-dry-clay-jewelry-dish.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>painted air dry clay jewelry dish</figcaption></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Step 7: Seal the dish</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I used gloss varnish for sealing my jewelry dish. Or you can use UV resin, polyurethane varnish or epoxy resin for glassy like finish.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_ef56a7-5a"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="693" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/gloss-varnish-1024x693.webp" alt="gloss varnish" class="kb-img wp-image-4872" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/gloss-varnish-1024x693.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/gloss-varnish-300x203.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/gloss-varnish-768x520.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/gloss-varnish.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>gloss varnish</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Gloss varnish also dries in the air and <a href="https://clayandme.com/how-to-get-a-glossy-ceramic-like-finish-on-air-dry-clay/">provides a ceramic, glossy finish</a>. If you use UV resin you probably have to let it dry and cure under UV light. Gloss varnish is easy to use, but it dries more slowly, which takes about 24 hours to dry and cure.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_2d43c5-75"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/sealing-jewelry-dish-1024x576.webp" alt="sealing jewelry dish" class="kb-img wp-image-4873" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/sealing-jewelry-dish-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/sealing-jewelry-dish-300x169.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/sealing-jewelry-dish-768x432.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/sealing-jewelry-dish-480x270.webp 480w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/sealing-jewelry-dish.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>sealing jewelry dish</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most importantly, gloss varnish offers long term protection with a water resistant coating. It stops moisture from getting inside your air dry clay project. Moisture can weaken the clay, loosen the joints and misshape the project. Therefore, applying a sealer is a must.</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_8e3046-07"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="689" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/sealing-with-gloss-varnish-1024x689.webp" alt="sealing with gloss varnish" class="kb-img wp-image-4874" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/sealing-with-gloss-varnish-1024x689.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/sealing-with-gloss-varnish-300x202.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/sealing-with-gloss-varnish-768x516.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/sealing-with-gloss-varnish.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>sealing with gloss varnish</figcaption></figure></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Apply 2-3 coats of gloss varnish for a shiny glossy like finish in one direction. Apply thin and even coats to avoid forming tacky spots, just like acrylics.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After sealing the whole dish surface, let it dry and cure for 24 hours.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I highly advise you to keep the project inside only. <a href="https://clayandme.com/can-air-dry-clay-go-outside/">Keeping air dry clay outside is not recommended</a> even after sealing because air dry clay cannot withstand environmental elements.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Congratulations, my people! Now you have successfully finished making an air dry clay jewelry dish like a champ!</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-image kb-image4840_a0d6bb-a2"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/final-result-1024x768.webp" alt="final result" class="kb-img wp-image-4875" srcset="https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/final-result-1024x768.webp 1024w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/final-result-300x225.webp 300w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/final-result-768x576.webp 768w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/final-result-500x375.webp 500w, https://clayandme.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/final-result.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>final result</figcaption></figure></div>
